Recent Reelfoot drownings blamed on hazardous weather conditions
Hazardous weather conditions on Reelfoot Lake continue to cause problems for fishermen this spring.
Samburg Volunteer Fire Department assistant fire chief Joe Cole told The Messenger this morning strong winds at the lake swamped a fishing boat late last week and two brothers from Ohio were thrown into the water. One of the brothers made it to safety at Green Island. The other brother drowned, according to Cole.

New ag development under way at airport

Work has started on a new agricultural development at Everett-Stewart Regional Airport. Stakes have been posted at the site that will ultimately be used by crop duster pilots serving the area’s farmers.
The Everett-Stewart Re-gional Airport Board met early today, and although there wasn’t a quorum present for the meeting, those who did make the meeting were given an update on 10 projects under way at the airport.

Junior Auxiliary of Obion County will sponsor Healthy Start/Healthy Finish, a free event for area children, Saturday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Union City High School’s War Memorial Stadium.
With a focus on encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle for youth, Junior Auxiliary members will conduct activities such as radar baseball, 4-square, hula hoops, balloon toss, horse shoes and bounce equipment provided by Larry Mink.

OCCHS Quarterback Club thrown for a loss

The Obion County Central High School Quarterback Club has some serious issues.
The process of addressing and correcting them has begun.
Obion County Director of Schools David Huss contacted the state comptroller’s office Monday to self-report the questionable accounting practices of the organization that listed raising more than $271,000 over a four-year period and spending more than $242,000 of that.

Illegal dumping at wastewater plant reported
Dwayne Hensley, director of the city’s waste water treatment plant, says there is evidence of illegal dumping at the A.L. Strub Waste-water Plant in Union City. There is no danger to the public drinking water supply, he said, but there is a concern that the plant could be subject to expensive fines if the perpetrators are not identified and the practice stopped.

UC gets $400,000 in Brownfields grants
Union City just got a boost in its request to rid the city of a most unsightly building in the community.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced it plans to award Union City $400,000 in grants — a $200,000 assessment grant for hazardous substances and a $200,000 assessment grant for petroleum. The money will be used for environmental testing at the former Reelfoot Packing Co. so it can be determined how the property should be cleaned up, Union City city manager Kathy Dillon said. Read More ...

Letter carriers picking up in effort to Stamp Out Hunger

WASHINGTON — The National Association of Letter Carriers will conduct its 21st annual food drive to combat hunger on Saturday. Letter carriers will collect non-perishable food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes.
It is the nation’s largest single-day food drive, and is held annually on the second Saturday in May in 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam.
Last year, letter carriers collected 70.7 million pounds of food donations along their postal routes, bringing the total to 1.2 billion pounds for the NALC’s food drive, which began in 1992.

Kenton industry adding 25-50 jobs

Kenton industry KMI Group Inc. is planning to expand its operation and add 25-50 jobs, according to Kenton Mayor Virginia Davidson.
She made the announcement during the Kenton mayor and board of aldermen meeting Tuesday night.
“They are really excited, thinking they’re going to enlarge,” Mrs. Davidson told the board.
She said the Tennessee Valley Authority and the chambers of commerce in Obion and Gibson counties are involved in the expansion project.

For years, students learned all types of trades at the county vocational school in Union City’s industrial park.
Now, it’s the new home of the Obion County Board of Education’s central office.
The board office relocated this week from its longtime location at 316 South Third St. in Union City, adjacent to the courthouse, to its new location in the former vocational school at 1700 North Fifth St.
