Yellowjackets use one big inning to beat Dresden
The Greenfield Yellowjackets made it a regular-season sweep of the visiting Dresden Lions thanks to one offensive outburst in a 6-4 win last Tuesday afternoon. The win came 24 hours after GHS cruised past Dresden 14-3 courtesy of two big innings on Monday at Wilson Park.
In the second of the two Greenfield victories, all the Yellowjackets' run scoring took place in the sixth inning. The six-run eruption erased the Lions' 3-0 advantage.
The Lions hurt their chances on the base paths, losing runners in steal attempts. Dresden's first at-bat was an example. The Lions' No. 2 hitter, Justin Hatler singled for one of his two hits on the day. The senior stole second but was cut down trying to take third on a throw from Jacket catcher Brett Perkins to keep the game scoreless.
Dresden took the lead in the second inning. Eric Evans led off with a single and later scored, but, the damage could have been greater. Matthew Chappell walked and Roe Hughes singled, but Chappell was cut down on the basepaths for the third out to leave the Lions' lead at 1-0.
Dresden had base runners in the third and fourth innings too, but did not add to its lead.
The Lions finally got more runs in the top of the sixth. Hatler singled and scored, while Evans drew a walk and scored. Dwayne Bailey had a double and Chappell added a single. Bailey was erased on a fielder's choice to put Hughes on, but Greenfield got out of the inning with a fly for the third out.
Trailing 3-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Jackets got busy. Steven Johnson and Colin Medling singled followed by a Dalton Potts double and a triple by Daniel Ricketts. Derek Lasater and Ty Smithson then drew walks before Jonathan Benson doubled. Johnson, Medling, Potts, Ricketts, Lasater and Smithson all scored to put GHS in front 6-3.
The Lions didn't quit, plating a run in the seventh as Stephen McDearmon reached on an error and scored on a Greg Alderdice double for the game's final run in Greenfield's 6-4 win.
