Hughes, homers send Dresden past War Eagles
Hughes, homers send Dresden past War Eagles | West Carroll War Eagles, Dresden Lions, Roe Hughes, Dresden, Tennessee

Mound dominance — Dresden senior right-hander Roe Hughes stifled the West Carroll offense in his team's 8-4 victory Wednesday afternoon. In his five innings of work, Hughes struck out eight War Eagles while allowing just one walk and one hit, a single.
The Dresden Lions got an outstanding start from senior right-hander Roe Hughes and four longballs to pound the visiting West Carroll War Eagles in baseball action Wednesday at Wilson Park.
With the combined offense and starting pitching, Dresden earned an 8-4 win.
Hughes dominated the War Eagle batters. The senior struck out eight while giving up just one walk and one single over five innings of action.
The Lions' bullpen wasn't as effective in relief, allowing all four War Eagle runs in the sixth inning via a double, four walks and a hit batter.
Senior Justin Hatler eventually came to the mound and stopped the bleeding. With two men on base, Hatler struck out three consecutive West Carroll batters to end the inning.
After walking two batters in the top of the seventh, Hatler then retired the next three he faced, including whiffing a pair to close out the Lions' 8-4 win.
At the plate, the Dresden offense relied on the round-tripper to do the bulk of its damage. The top of the Lion line-up was the most effective. The first five DHS batters recorded nine of the team's 11 base hits and all four of the home runs.
Despite the power display, Dresden's first run came via the manufactured route. Lion leadoff man Greg Alderdice singled in the first DHS plate appearance and eventually scampered across home plate for a 1-0 lead for the Black and Gold.
Dwayne Bailey smacked the first Dresden homer to lead off the second inning and double the Lions' lead.
The big hits kept coming in the third inning. Alderdice opened the at-bat with a double. Hatler drew a walk and Matt Beaty ripped a line drive homer down the line and over the right field fence for a 5-0 advantage.
After a three-up, three-down showing in the fourth inning, the Lions' lightning struck again. Hatler led off the fifth with a home run to right field. After a pop foul for an out, Eric Evans smashed a solo shot to left field over the 330-foot sign to push the Dresden lead to 7-0.
West Carroll took advantage of the wildness of Bailey and Stephen McDearmon to plate their four runs in the sixth.
Dresden got one of those runs back in the bottom of the seventh as Hatler singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
At the plate for DHS, Alder-dice, Hatler, Evans and Bailey all notched two hits. Hatler scored three runs, and Evans drove in three runs.
