UTM library will offer new venue for art

The University of Tennessee at Martin Paul Meek Library and Department of Visual and Theatre Arts are collaborating to bring contemporary art exhibitions and events to the library.
“Both the library and the visual and theatre arts department understand the importance of a supportive arts culture in the community and will work together to develop a yearly program of visual arts and culture,” said Lane Last, UT Martin associate professor of art.
The effort recently began with the hanging of a work, “Of Vibrations and Time,” by Last in the library. It will continue as more exhibition infrastructure can be secured and installed. Future exhibitions will include other faculty members’ work, student art, traveling exhibitions and possibly regional artists.
“Our department is thrilled to have this opportunity to work with another division on campus to expand the visual arts and cultural environment in northwest Tennessee,” Last said. “Exciting things will be happening in the Paul Meek Library for everyone. I’m looking forward to working with (library director) Mary Carpenter and her staff to help this initiative grow.”
“Lane Last’s art has brought a new dimension to the Paul Meek Library and we are very pleased with the results,” said Sam Richardson, circulation/instruction librarian.
“We believe the library is the heart of the campus and should mirror it, and we hope to represent all academic departments some way.”
“The Paul Meek Library is a perfect destination for more public art on campus, as it is becoming a cultural institution on campus as well as a resource hub,” Mrs. Carpenter said.
