Catching fire in the fourth inning, the Gleason offense posted three runs and held the McKenzie Rebels scoreless for the game to take a 4-0 shutout win in baseball action this past Wednesday in McKenzie.
Both Gleason pitcher Colin Bennett and McKenzie pitcher Nick Chappell held the offenses at bay through the first three innings of play, but in the fourth the bats of the Orange and Black took over and propelled the visitors to an insurmountable lead. Bulldog catcher Matt Mayo got things going with a leadoff walk and first baseman Chase Griffin followed with a fly ball to center field that fell in for a single. Nicky Spain, who was sent in as a courtesy runner for Mayo, raced across home plate on an Alex Verdell single to give Gleason the 1-0 lead. Griffin advanced to third on the hit and came in to score with Verdell on a Cody Ezell line drive to deep center field to put the visitors ahead 3-0.
On the mound, Bennett forced the Rebel offense into grounding out three straight times to end the fourth frame.
In the fifth, Mayo advanced all the way to second base on an errant throw to first base. Spain was again sent in as a courtesy runner and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. A deep hit to right field from Griffin sent Spain home and made the score 4-0 in favor of the Bulldogs.
The Gleason defense held strong and Bennett ended the day having pitched a one-hitter to secure the four-run victory for the visitors.
