Dominant pitching and solid defense helped the Westview Lady Chargers win seven of eight games over the weekend.
The lone loss for the Blue and Gold came in the championship game of the Sluggfest Tournament hosted by Marshall County High School (Ky.).
In addition to the runner-up finish, the Westview girls managed to pick up a district win over Dyer County in make-up action on Sunday to close out their busy weekend.
The Lady Chargers now stand at 19-5-1 on the season and 4-1 against District 13-AA foes. The lone district defeat compared to four wins is good enough to place the Lady Chargers at the top of the district standings ahead of Gibson County's 3-1 mark. Those two teams will tangle today (Tuesday) in Dyer and on Thursday afternoon at the Martin Recreation Complex with first place at stake.
Over the weekend, Westview starting pitching continued to control the action. Over 44 innings, the Lady Chargers allowed runs to score in only two opponent at-bats. Westview hurlers strung together 30 consecutive innings without allowing a run to score. Out of their eight games, six of their seven victories were of the shutout variety. The defense did its part, committing only six errors.
"My pitchers have been light out," Westview head coach J.B. Suiter stated.
The young tandem of Shanna Chappell and Shaylon Robb have perplexed opposing batters all season. Chappell, a sophomore, has compiled an 8-5-1 record with a slim ERA of 0.82. No team has yet to figure out Robb. The freshman is unbeaten with an 11-0 record and a miniscule ERA of 0.21.
Over the weekend, Chappell pitched 28 innings. During that span she struck out 40 batters while allowing just 10 hits, nine walks and hit three batters. The right-hander tossed a no-hitter in Westview's 15-0 pool play win over Massac County. Chappell was saddled with the lone loss of the three days.
Robb's totals for the weekend are also impressive. The freshman pitched 16 innings. During her time on the mound, she struck out 28 batters while giving up just three total hits and walking two and hitting one batter. Robb also had a no-hitter. Hers also came against Massac County when the Lady Chargers faced them during the bracketed portion of the event. Westview picked up a 15-0 victory in Robb's outing.
The bats were just as hot for Westview pummeling the opposing pitchers. The Lady Chargers out-scored their opponents 66-7 during the eight-game span.
Westview began weekend action with pool play in the Sluggfest on Friday. The first team mowed down by WHS was the host Marshall County squad. Westview, in one of its closer games of the weekend, earned a 4-1 victory. The Lady Chargers followed that performance with a 5-0 victory over Gallatin.
Resuming pool play on Satur-day, WHS took its first win over 14-0 Massac and followed that immediately with its second win (15-0). The scoreless streak continued with a 10-0 win over St. Mary and carried on through the semifinal 6-0 win over Butler.
Grayson snapped the streak in the third inning of the championship game when it plated six run in the only WHS loss, 6-2.
Westview bounced back on Sunday by hosting and downing Dyer County, 10-0.
