Westview improves hold on first place
The Westview Lady Chargers padded their first-place advantage in District 13-AA with wins over Dyersburg and Gibson County last week.
The Lady Chargers edged the Dyersburg Lady Trojans, 5-3, on Wednesday before crushing Gibson County's Lady Pioneers, 15-0, on Thursday.
Against Dyerburg, Westview never put together a big inning. Instead, the Lady Chargers slowly pulled away, plating a run in each of the first five inning.
Kelly Gaston, the first batter of the game, reached on an error and scored on a Sam Giesler single for a 1-0 WHS lead.
Caitlyn Landry singled and crossed home on Emily Belote's single in the second.
In the third, Ashley Bynum singled and scored on Jenna Hazelwood's double.
The fourth inning was similar to the first. This time it was Belote reaching on an error and scoring on Giesler's single for a 4-0 cushion.
Dyersburg cut that lead in half by using three singles to plate two runs.
Westview got one back in the top of the fifth. Bynum tripled and scored for a 5-2 lead.
Dyersburg used two doubles to score a run in the sixth and had the tying runs on base in the seventh, but Westview starting pitcher Shaylon Robb worked out of the jam to earn the 5-3 win for Westview.
Against Gibson County on Thursday, the game was never in doubt. Westview pushed three runs across in the home half of the first inning and put 11 on the scoreboard in the second inning to put the game away. A lone run in the fourth inning was enough to put the mercy rule into effect.
Union University signee Carmesha Owens had a huge day at the plate for Westview. The Lady Charger senior was a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBIs and two doubles. Bynum was the only other Lady Charger with more than two hits. Bynum was 3-for-4 with a run and two doubles.
