Lady Dawgs and Lady Chargers find going tough in tournament
The going was tough for the Gleason Lady Bulldogs and the Westview Lady Chargers competing in the Border Wars Tournament over the weekend in Martin.
The Westview Lady Chargers put together a 2-3 record in their five games, while the Gleason girls dropped all three of their games. Westview was knocked out of competition for the title with a loss to eventual tourney champs Marshall County in their second game of the bracketed portion of the softball event.
The Lady Bulldogs were dealt an 11-1 loss by Gibson County's Lady Pioneers in their first pool game on Friday.
Lacy Trevathan singled and scored in the first Gleason at-bat, but Gibson County had the lead, 2-1, at the end of the first inning thanks to two unearned runs.
Taylor Stout smacked a one-out double for the Lady Dawgs in the second inning, but was stranded in scoring position. She was the last baserunner Gleason would have in their four-inning loss as Gibson County added six runs in the third inning and three runs in the fourth to take the win.
Against Harpeth, the Lady Bulldogs were shut out 7-0. Gleason managed just two hits, a single each from Taylor Wharton and Kayla Goodlow.
Gleason's pursuit of the tourney title came to an end with a 7-1 loss to Murray on Saturday.
The Lady Dawgs stranded four baserunners in scoring position in the loss. Stout reached on an error and scored the only GHS run in the defeat.
The Lady Chargers opened play with a 2-0 loss to Station Camp. Westview's opponent took advantage of uncharacteristic wildness from starting pitcher Shaylon Robb to plate a run in the first inning. Robb hit a batter who eventually scored on a wild pitch.
That was enough offense to top Westview as the Lady Chargers were limited to two hits, singles by Robb and Sam Giesler.
The Lady Chargers bounced back with a 10-0 victory over Chester County. After a quiet first game, the Westview bats were ringing out hits, tallying 11 base knocks in the win. Jenna Hazelwood had three RBIs and scored a run in the win.
Westview's third pool game was a 2-0 loss to Ripley. The Lady Chargers were limited to one hit, a Giesler single. Giesler, the only Lady Charger to reach base in the game, was thrown out trying to stretch her single into a double.
Ripley took advantage of a walk in the first inning to plate what turned out to be the winning run. Back-to-back singles in the third gave the victors their other run.
Westview, with its win over Chester County, advanced out of pool play into the bracket portion of the tourney.
In their first game against a seeded foe, the Lady Chargers buried Murray, 13-0. Westview rapped 15 hits and didn't commit an error behind the pitching of Shanna Chappell. Mary Kirk Mesimer ripped a bases-loaded single to bring in three runs in the second inning. She ended the game with five RBIs and scored one run.
Against Marshall County, an unearned run was the difference in Westview's 1-0 loss.
Westview's best chance to score came in the fourth inning. With one out in the books, Giesler reached on an error and Carmesha Owens was hit by a pitch to put two on base. However, a force out at third and a groundout ended the Lady Chargers' threat.
