Beaty homers power Dresden over Devils
Beaty homers power Dresden over Devils | Dresden High School, Dresden, Tennessee, Matthew Chappell, Matt Beaty, baseball

Wary — Dresden's Matthew Chappell (left) keeps an eye on the South Fulton pitcher during his team's win Tuesday afternoon. The Lion offense cranked out 12 runs, while the defense and pitching kept the visitors off the scoreboard.
With two home runs from Matt Beaty and eight strikeouts from Justin Hatler, the Dresden Lions put the visiting South Fulton Red Devils away in the top of the fifth inning, 12-0, Tuesday afternoon in Dresden.
Hatler started the game off with three strikeouts, but South Fulton pitcher Johnny Clouse silenced the Dresden bats as well to end the first inning scoreless.
In the second inning, Eric Evans led off with a double and was replaced by Will Vernon as the courtesy runner. Dwayne Bailey’s fly to center field scored Vernon and put the Lions ahead, 1-0. Matthew Chappell lined into center and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Daniel Harris singled to score Bailey and make the score 2-0 in favor of Dresden. Greg Alderdice walked and Hatler’s smash to deep center field scored three runs and gave the Lions a 5-0 lead. Beaty followed Hatler’s double with his first blast over the fence to bring home two runs and put Dresden ahead 7-0 after two innings.
The Dresden offense picked up again in the third inning when Chappell lined into the gap in right field, Roe Hughes hit a line drive to center field and Peeler knocked a double deep to right field to score Chappell and put the Lions up 8-0. Harris followed Peeler’s double with a double of his own to bring home two runs and give Dresden a 10-0 lead. Hatler brought home Harris and Beatty belted his second home run of the game — this time a solo shot — to give Dresden a 12-0 lead at the end of three and the visitors, failing to put any runs on the board in either the fourth or fifth innings, took the shutout loss.
