The Gleason Lady Bulldogs got one run in the top of the first inning in their match-up with district and county rival Greenfield on Tuesday.
That lone run was the only one the Lady Bulldogs needed, but not the only one they scored. Gleason took a dominating 15-0 victory over the visiting Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets.
Greenfield got its only base hit of the game off Lady Bulldog starter Taylor Wharton, a Brantley Wiley single to center field, in the top of the first. Wiley's line drive came with two outs in the books and the Lady Jackets did not send her around the horn to home, leaving the game scoreless.
But not for long. Gleason took advantage of its first chance to send batters to the plate. With one out, Amy Spain was hit in the foot by a pitch from Greenfield starter Morgan Bodkins. Spain used her speed to steal second base and third base before racing home on a grounder to short off the bat of Katlin Gaylord.
Trailing 1-0, Greenfield's Jordan Galey drew a walk to open the second inning but was hit by a batted ball while running the bases for the first out. The dead ball out put Jessica Williams on first, but she was erased on a force out at second base. Wharton retired the next four Lady Jackets in order to preserve the shutout.
While the Greenfield offense was silenced, the Lady Bulldogs went on a tear. Gleason scored 13 runs on eight hits and two errors in the second inning. Eight of the nine batters in the line-up scored at least one run in inning. Mallorie James, Breeanna Wallace, Kayla Goodlow, Lacie Trevathan and Spain all scored twice in the at-bat.
Wharton not only earned the mound win, she had a big day at the plate going 2-for-3 with a triple and a double. The senior doubled over the third base bag and down the line to begin the home half of the third inning. She moved to third on an error and scored on James' RBI groundout. |
