Classmate apologizes for attack

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — The mother of a Lexington teenager who died earlier this week nearly two months after a fight with a classmate at a prep school in Tennessee says she has forgiven the boy who hit her son.
Carmen Covert said on Thursday she holds no bitterness against the boy who assaulted her son Bobby during an intramural Wiffle Ball game at McCallie School in Chattanooga on March 2.
Bobby Covert spent several days at a Tennessee hospital before returning to Kentucky. Shortly after coming home he suffered the aneurysm and died of complications from the injury. An autopsy was schedule on Thursday in Frankfort. It’s unclear whether Covert’s death had anything to do with the fight.
Carmen Covert said the boy wrote her son a letter apologizing for the fight, saying he still considered Bobby a friend.
“He said ‘He was my friend before and he is still my friend,”’ Carmen Covert said.
The boy was charged with aggravated assault after the fight. Police have not said whether they will file more charges.
Carmen Covert said she’s not sure what happened during the fight and that she’s not focused on seeing the boy prosecuted.
“This is not about somebody’s interpretation of what they saw,” she said.
Students at Lexington Traditional Magnet School, which Covert attended for three years, wore orange on Thursday in honor of Bobby Covert’s reddish-orange hair. They have also been wearing bobby pins with orange ribbons.
A memorial service will be held on May 10 in Lexington.
