The 3 R's - group | Union City Elementary School, Earth Day, Obion County Solid Waste director Mike Cary, recycling
The Messenger 05.07.08

THE 3 R’S — Union City Elementary School recently celebrated Earth Day with a considerable amount of enthusiasm. School librarian Patricia Segraves (top photo, second from right) began a week in advance reading books related to the theme of Earth Day to all of her classes. On Earth Day, Obion County Solid Waste director Mike Cary (third from left) and Cindy Black (far right) from the Department of Solid Waste Education in Memphis presented a program in which students learned about the three R’s of recycling — reducing, reusing and recycling — and how they can be “Earth smart.” They were joined by UCES pre-kindergarten students (from left) Eli Ervin and Khya Maddox. Two dogwood trees were also planted at the campus in honor of Earth Day 2008. Several students wrote essays about Earth Day, emphasizing its importance and what they have learned. Fourth-grader Alexis Hughes (bottom photo), a student in Katie Hall’s class, wrote a poem entitled “Earth Day 2008.” One of the goals Mrs. Segraves had for the week was to encourage all 784 students at UCES to go home and help their families start recycling in order to make the earth a better place to live. (See related recycling story and photos on the front of today’s Friends & Neighbors section, Page B1.)
