Despite nearly completing a comeback from a five-run deficit in the sixth inning, the Westview Chargers fell just short of the Obion County Rebels, 5-3, eliminating the Blue and Gold from District 13-AA Baseball Tournament contention Sunday afternoon in Dyersburg.
The loss for WHS was its second in the double elimination tourney. Westview dropped an 11-5 decision to the Crockett County Cavaliers on Thursday.
The Rebels got their scoring going in the second inning with a leadoff solo shot to take a 1-0 lead. Another run came in on a double to center field and a wild pitch on a bases-loaded situation brought in the third run of the inning to put Obion County up 3-0 after two.
The Rebels scored their fourth run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Charger head coach Brian Allen called on Madison Hughey to take the mound in relief for Westview. The WHS junior ended the scoring opportunity for the Rebels.
In the sixth inning, the Rebels drove in a run on a sac fly to put themselves ahead 5-0, but Westview was ready with an answer. Chris Fowler led off with a single and Andrew Fisher followed with a single to advance Fowler to second. Taylor Webber walked to load the bases and Travis Garner doubled to drive in two runs and cut the OC lead to 5-2. Bryant Fisher hit a ball that was dropped by the Rebel first baseman and Hughey knocked a chopper that bounced over the second baseman’s head and drove in a run to make the score 5-3. Neither team put together any more offense in the final inning and Obion County took the victory and advanced to face Crockett County.
The loss brings an end to the Chargers’ season with an overall record of 15-13. Westview was 6-6 against district foes during the regular season, good enough for a fourth-place finish in the standings.
Against Crockett County's Cavaliers, the Chargers fell behind early. Westview starter Bryant Fisher struck out three Cavs in the first inning, however a walk and a hit batter both scored for a quick 2-0 CC lead.
Fisher gave up two more runs in the second, but reliever Bryton Ramsey came in with the bases loaded and got a strikeout to keep the Cavs' lead at 4-0.
Westview forged a tie with four runs in the third. Madison Hughey and Chris Fowler each recorded an RBI in the at-bat.
The Cavs turned a two-run lead into a six-run cushion, 11-5, with four runs in the seventh.
The Chargers were retired in order in their final at-bat.
Four Chargers finished their high school athletic careers with the arrival of the end of the Westview season. The seniors who led the team during the 2008 season were Bryant Fisher, Chris Fowler, Matthew Tucker and Tyler Turner. |
