Lady Jackets must wait another year for first regional tennis title
Having just won the first District 14 A-AA team title in the young history of the Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets' tennis program, the Orange and Black will have to wait another year for its first regional crown.
Facing the always-tough University School of Jackson Lady Bruins in the Region 7 A-AA team final at Skyhawk Courts in Martin on Monday, Greenfield fell by a 5-0 tally.
All five points for USJ were from singles matches. No doubles matches were necessary to determine the winner.
In the match-up at No. 1 singles, Lady Bruin Madison Patey defeated Greenfield's Katie McCall, 6-2, 6-0.
At No. 2, Mallory Robinson won more total games than any other Lady Yellowjacket, but ultimately fell to Rebecca Johnston, 6-2, 6-3.
At No. 3, USJ's Madeline Crocker downed Summer Hoke, 6-2, 6-0.
At No. 4, Greenfield's Melissa McCartney lost to Emily Mullins, 6-2, 6-1.
In the final singles match, Greenfield's No. 5 Natalie Medling was stopped by Hillary Ross, 6-1, 6-1.
The Greenfield tennis team finishes its season with a 12-2 overall record.
While the GHS squad as a whole is done for the season, one Lady Yellowjacket still has aspirations of being crowned a state champion,
McCall, the top singles player in the district during the regular season and the 14 A-AA tournament, will also compete at the regional level as an individual competitor. This is the second year in a row that the sophomore has vied for the regional championship.
McCall will take part in the Region 7 A-AA singles semifinals at Skyhawk Court in Martin on Monday afternoon.
