Jared Barnes, a recent graduate of the University of Tennessee at Martin, was recently named recipient of the Botanical Society of America’s Young Botanist of the Year 2008 award.
This award, the 2008 Certificate of Special Achievement, is given to graduating seniors in recognition of their achievement in plant sciences. Barnes was nominated by his advisor, Dr. Darrell L. Ray.
Barnes is the son of Cleo and Becky Barnes of Union City.

Two Obion County students were recently awarded scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year to attend the University of Tennessee at Martin.
Scholarship recipients included:
• Meagan Beasley, daughter of James and Karen Beasley of Hornbeak, who will be a freshman and who received the Dean’s Scholarship; and
• Sarah Wright, daughter of Elizabeth Wright and Ralph Wright Jr., both of Union City, who will be a freshman and who received the Chancellor’s Award.
