Briefly Streaking Greyhounds finish weekend sweep The Union City Greyhounds completed a three-game sweep of lowly Farmington and ran their overall winning streak to five games with two victories vs. the Firebirds over the weekend. UC outslugged the cellar-dwellers 12-8 on Friday, then posted a 6-4 victory over Saturday. No details were made available for either game on the official Kitty League Web site, continuing a season-long trend in which Farmington (5-30) has yet to provide box scores or game statistics to the media or the remainder of the league from its home games. Union City did improve to 22-18 with 10 games left in the regular season. The Greyhounds continue a nine-game road swing tonight with the first of three contests at Owensboro. UC will then play at Fulton on three consecutive nights, starting Thursday, before returning home on July 23 for four games prior to the start of the league’s postseason tournament. Wynridge golf winners decided by tie-breaker The team of Randy Kincade, Wayne Storey, Sidney Chappell and Patrick Bane combined to shoot eight-under par and win a scorecard playoff to take first place in the weekly men’s scramble at Wynridge Greens in Troy Thursday evening. A group including Hal Chitwood, Matt Russell, Bruce Culver, Glen Hale and Eddie Thompson also came in with an eight-under total and placed second. Three different teams were another shot back at seven-under. Wynridge Greens holds its weekly men’s scramble every Thursday. For more information, contact the course at 536-4653. Reds to host tryouts at Graves Co. High The Cincinnati Reds will hold a tryout camp at the Graves County High School baseball field in Mayfield on July 23. Registration is set for 9 a.m., and the auditions begin an hour later. Players ages 16-22 are invited to attend the session, but all American Legion players must have written permission to participate from their coach or Post Commander. All players under 21 must have a written release from a parent or guardian accepting “full legal liability” in order to work out. For more information, call Jim Grief at (270) 744-8920 or (270) 443-0145. Skyhawk softball team adds Ill. prep standout Erin Driskell, a three-time all-conference and twice an all-state outfielder from Glenwood High School in Chatham, Ill., will join The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team for the 2009 season next spring. Driskell helped lead Glenwood to three consecutive conference championships from 2005-07. She played centerfield and pitched for head coach Vonder Edgar. UTM finished the 2008 campaign with a 28-27 overall record while fielding one of the youngest teams in the nation last spring. The team lost just one senior from that club. Co-ed softball tourney to benefit Hornbeak A co-ed softball tournament will benefit the Hornbeak Little League baseball team. The tourney will be held July 26 at a site yet to-be-determined, according to organizers. Entry fee will be $125 per team. For further information, call 592-2787. Published in The Messenger 7.14.08
