AN APPLE A DAY — Nadia Treadwell, a second-grader at Union City Elementary School, celebrated National School Lunch Week with a crispy red apple during her lunch time at school Monday. Students at all schools in the Union City School System will receive special treats this week to call attention to the healthy meals provided by the system. School lunches must meet federal guidelines that recommend no more than 30 percent of calories come from fat and less than 10 percent from saturated fat. Regulations followed by the local school menu plan also provide the recommended dietary allowances of protein, vitamins A and C, iron, calcium and calories, and all for $1.85 for students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grades and $2 for older students per day. Meals include milk, meat or meat alternate, bread and a choice of two fruits or two vegetables or one of each. Children who meet certain eligibility standards can eat free or at a reduced price of 40 cents. Portions are in age-appropriate sizes. |
