Game on in Martin's World Series
Anticipation and excitement hangs in the air as the 12 Year Old Cal Ripken Baseball World Series began Thursday at the Martin Recreation Complex. Events began Wednesday as Martin Parks and Recreation hosted a picnic at the Martin Recreational Complex with teams coming from as far as Washington State, Delaware and Florida. A banquet with baseball legend Bobby Richardson was also held as young players could meet the famed Yankee. Nelda Pritchard, the regional manager of the Task Force for the World Series, gave high honors to co-chairpersons Brian Moore and Kim Kirby. “The facilities are top notch,” Pritchard said. “The coaches are all bragging that the fields are wonderful.” “The organization is fantastic,” she added. “No stone has been left unturned.” The picnic brought together the teams, the organizers and host families who are keeping some of the players during the event. “This is wonderful for the city of Martin,” Alderman Randy Edwards said. “It just couldn’t get any better.” The first game, New England vs. Ohio Valley, began at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Martin’s team played on Thursday at 7:45 p.m. against the Southeat team. On Aug. 7-11, ten teams will compete in pool play. At the end of the pool play, the first and second place of the American and National division will compete in single eliminations that are scheduled to start Tuesday, Aug. 12. The teams win-loss record determines the first and second place teams during the pool play. The ten teams are divided into an American Division, which includes Martin, and a National Division, that includes Lake County’s team. Different regions in the United States are represented with eight other teams. The American Division includes Southeast, Middle Atlantic, Midwest Plains and Pacific Southwest teams. The National Division is represented by teams from the Southeast, Pacific Northwest, New England and Ohio Valley region. Martin played on Aug. 7 at 7:45 p.m. against the Southeast team, and again on Aug. 8 at 7:45 p.m. against the Midwest Plains team. On Saturday, Martin will play against the Middle Atlantic team at 3:30 p.m. Martin’s final game is Monday, Aug. 11 at 7:45 p.m. against the Pacific Southwest. Tickets are on sale now at the Martin Parks and Recreation Office on Lindell St. Tickets are also available from members of Martin’s Cal Ripken Baseball League. Family passes are $50 for the weekend.
