Wife shoots, kills spouse
A Greenfield man was the victim of fatal gunshot wounds Wednesday night after an apparent domestic dispute with his wife. According to a press release issued by the Weakley County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were dispatched to the home of Lilly and Donnie Cantrell at 502 Will Young Road between Dresden and Greenfield shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday. Mr. Cantrell was found dead at the scene as a result of more than gunshot wound from a 380 Caliber pistol. WCSD Sheriff Mike Wilson said Thursday morning his department does not have a record of past domestic disputes at the Cantrell’s home. Wilson did confirm Mrs. Cantrell had “some marks” as a result of the dispute. After questioning, family members took Mrs. Cantrell herself to a local hospital with minor injuries. Mr. Cantrell’s body was sent to the Shelby County Medical Examiner’s office in Memphis for an autopsy, according to the release. Wilson said an autopsy is used to determine any contributing factors for the cause of death and blood tests will be taken. No charges have been filed at this time. Wilson said investigators of the case would seek an opinion from the district attorney’s office. The couple had been married for at least 30 years. Mr. Cantrell was employed at the E.W. James and Sons grocery store in McKenzie, while his wife was an employee at the Weakley County courthouse. WCSD Inv. Candace Winstead is the lead investigator of the case. Chief Dep. Mark Black, Inv. Marty Plunk and WCSD officers responded to the scene.
