Firings recommended in student’s death KNOXVILLE (AP) — Knox County school system officials who investigated the death of a 17-year-old Karns High School student on campus have recommended two educators be fired. The Knoxville News Sentinel reported on its Web site today the report recommends the termination of classroom teacher Doyle Schultz and David Boggan, who supervised Schultz. The student, Eric Law, was helping move furniture at the school on Aug. 13 when he fell from the bed of a pickup truck. Records showed Law lost consciousness after his head struck the pavement and that his head was bleeding. His mother was called and she took him to a hospital, where he died five days after the incident. The report also recommends a policy that prohibits using students as laborers during instructional time and modifying policies about calling 911 about student injuries. ——— Man dies in house fire near Chattanooga SALE CREEK (AP) — A man died when his house caught fire in Sale Creek early today. The Chattanooga Time Free Press quoted Hamilton County Sheriff’s officials as saying the victim was Kenneth Michael Carlisle. The 56-year-old Carlisle was reported to have lived alone. The blaze was reported by a neighbor shortly before 4 a.m. WTVC-TV in Chattanooga reported firefighters did not hear smoke alarms when they went into the house to find the victim and douse the flames. The victim’s name wasn’t immediately released. ——— Murder charges upgraded against former deputy MEMPHIS (AP) — A grand jury in Memphis has upgraded murder charges against former Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Jones. The Commercial Appeal reported the new indictment charges Jones with first-degree murder in the shooting death of karaoke bar disc jockey Donald Munsey in March. Jones had initially been charged with second-degree murder. The new charges indicate prosecutors believe he acted with premeditation. Witnesses said Jones threatened the lives of several people at the Windjammer Restaurant and shot one person. Witnesses said when Munsey tried to intervene, he and Jones struggled on the ground and Munsey was fatally shot. Published in The Messenger 8.29.08
