McKenzie keeps DHS in search of first win
McKenzie keeps DHS in search of first win | Dresden High School, Jackie Dean, Zach Jolley, Lions, McKenzie High School Rebels, Tennessee, Dresden, McKenzie

Rumbling — Dresden High School fullback Jackie Dean (left) leads the way into the open field for teammate Zach Jolley in the Lions' 35-0 loss to McKenzie on Friday night.
Looking to leave no doubts that they were last season’s state Single-A runner-up, the McKenzie High School Rebels got off to a quick start and blanked the Dresden High School Lions, 35-0, in football action this past Friday night in Dresden.
The Lions started the game on offense and made progress on the ground by going to a variety of runners. On third-and-long, senior Zach Garner broke loose for a 21-yard gain and a first down. Jackie Dean, Zach Jolley and Daniel Harris kept the series going by chewing up tough yardage, but the Lions soon faced a fourth-and-long and turned the ball over on downs.
McKenzie took over on its own 32-yard line and picked up five yards from Quinton Bowden. Jacob Fussell tacked on a yard and quarterback Austin McKinney found John Johnson through the air for a 13-yard gain. McKinney then went to the ground and found a hole in the defense to pick up 47 yards for a first-and-goal at the Dresden 2. From there, Bowden ran into the end zone. Harris Laughrey split the uprights and with 3:47 left in the first quarter, the visitors took a 7-0 lead.
Getting the ball back, the Lions picked up short yardage from Jolley and Dean, but were forced to punt. Jonathan Boyd’s punt attempt was blocked by Keon Williams and the Rebels found themselves on the Dresden 16-yard line. It only took one play — a run by Fussell — for the visitors to find the end zone again. Laughrey’s kick failed, but with 1:18 left in the first quarter McKenzie took the 13-0 lead.
The second quarter opened with Dresden punting. McKenzie took over but soon faced a fourth down situation. The first down was picked up on a 7-yard pass play from McKinney to Johnson, but the Rebels failed to convert their next fourth down situation and the ball went back to the Lions.
Dresden looked to be making progress on the ground until a penalty slowed the momentum. Back at the 20-yard line, Rebel Austin Taylor snatched the ball away and ran it 20 yards in the opposite direction for the McKenzie touchdown. McKinney ran in the conversion and the Rebels increased the lead to 21-0 with 5:12 left before the half.
On the kickoff, the Rebels popped the ball loose for another DHS turnover at the Dresden 22 yard line and scored again on a 22-yard pass from McKinney to Nick Chappell. Laughrey added the extra point and McKenzie took the 28-0 lead with 4:57 left before the half.
The Rebels scored again in the third frame on a 72-yard run from Bowden with 2:54 left before the final frame. Laughrey’s kick made the score 35-0 in favor of the visitors and the Rebels held onto the lead and took the win.
Both teams will now open up regional play in Week 2 with McKenzie facing Bruceton at home and Dresden entertaining the Peabody Tide at Rotary Field. Both games are set for kickoff 7:30 Friday night.
