UTM soccer sets new school record in 1-0 victory
UTM soccer sets new school record in 1-0 victory | UTM soccer, UT Martin soccer, Martin, Tennessee, Mississippi Valley State

Craig Roberts
MARTIN, Tenn. — Freshman Victoria Taylor’s goal in the 20th minute of play gave the University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team the only goal it would need in a 1-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State Sunday at Skyhawk Field.
The UT Martin offense found several holes throughout the match, attempting 39 shots — 16 on goal — and the defense held MVSU to seven shots, four on goal. The 39 shots set a new program record, besting the 38 the Skyhawks took in an 8-0 victory over Belmont on Sept. 17, 2003.
Sunday’s match also marked the 30th shutout in program history, and 16th of head coach Craig Roberts’ tenure.
“Today was just one of those days where our effort was there, we just simply didn’t convert our chances,” Roberts said. “We were attacking, we were very strong getting the ball downfield, and we maintained ourselves defensively. I was pleased with our overall performance.”
Taylor’s goal came off a deflection from a Skyhawk corner kick, one of 18 on the day for UT Martin. Sophomore Danielle Rogers found the ball in traffic, and scooped a pass to Taylor, who found the back of the net for her first goal of her career.
Rogers’ goal wound up being the game-winner for the Skyhawks, who improve to 2-1 on the season.
Taylor was one of nine true freshmen to see playing time for the Skyhawks, and Roberts has noticed that the group has adapted well to the collegiate level of the game so far.
“We once again got to introduce some of our freshmen to some game experiences today, and they have performed well,” Roberts said. “I really thought Devon Lowe had a big impact on today’s match.”
Senior goalkeeper Ashley Angerer started for the first time this season, notching three saves in all 90 minutes and earning her first career shutout.
The Skyhawks’ next match will be Friday, Sept. 5, where they will take part in the Racer-Hampton Inn Classic, hosted by Murray State University. Their opponent Friday will be SIU Edwardsville, which is the newest member in the Ohio Valley Conference. SIUE’s first season in the OVC will be in 2010. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Cutchin Field in Murray, Ky.

Skyhawks battle until the end in 1-0 loss to Belmont
MARTIN, Tenn. — A Belmont goal at the 28th minute of play provided the lone offensive spark for both teams Friday, as the visiting Bruins defeated the University of Tennessee at Martin at Skyhawk Field, 1-0.
In a match that was delayed 30 minutes due to storms in the northwest Tennessee region, the match was about as even as one can get, statistically speaking. The Skyhawks attempted 15 shots to Belmont’s 16, and Belmont had six corner kicks to UT Martin’s five. Belmont was whistled for 10 fouls, while the Skyhawks committed nine.
“I’m disappointed in the loss, but as a whole, it was good to get a very competitive game,” Skyhawks head coach Craig Roberts said. “We had a lot of offensive power, but we got unlucky and didn’t finish our chances.”
After Belmont freshman Gretchen Sutch knocked in a goal from the left side on an assist from Annie Musacchio, the game was filled with solid back-and-forth play, and some spectacular goalkeeping on both ends.
In the 65th minute, Belmont’s Jayme Trocino fired a shot that looked to be over Skyhawk goalkeeper Johanna Rathbun’s head. At the last split second, Rathbun timed a jump perfectly and tipped the ball with her fully outstretched arm, causing the ball to deflect off the top post and over the goal.
Thirteen minutes later, UT Martin sophomore Stephanie Nilica hooked a shot toward the goal, but Belmont’s Sari Lin jumped and knocked the ball over the top of the goal, just as Rathbun had done earlier.
Rathbun ended the match with seven saves, while Lin tallied five.
The Skyhawks continually rushed the goal in the closing minutes of the match, but couldn’t find the net.
“We have a few pointers and corrections we need to make here and there, but we’re confident we’ll get back on the right track,” Roberts said.
