Lions flirt with end zone but can't reach paydirt in 16-0 loss
Lions flirt with end zone but can't reach paydirt in 16-0 loss | Dresden High School Lions, Dresden, Tennessee, Peabody Golden Tide, Trenton

Punishing — Dresden's Zach Jolley makes it difficult for a pair of Peabody defenders to bring him down during the Lions' 16-0 regional loss Friday night. The host Lions got deep in the red zone on two occasions, but came up empty-handed.
Twice finding themselves inside the opponent’s 10-yard line, the Dresden Lions came up empty handed on both trips leading to a 16-0 District 8-2A opening loss to the visiting Peabody Golden Tide this past Friday night in Dresden.
On paper, both teams posted similar numbers. Both teams faced an 0-3 start to the season. It was the Lions’ inability to capitalize in the red zone, however, that proved to be the difference in the final score.
Dresden started the game on offense, but quickly faced a fourth down when an Isaac Butler pass missed its mark. Peabody took over on its own 23-yard line and picked up a quick first down on runs of 6 and 8 yards from Devin Slayton. On second down, Slayton busted down the field and into Lion territory with a 26-yard carry and from there, the Golden Tide ate up the field with short gains leading to a 3-yard touchdown run from quarterback Todd Lumley. Jake Callahan kicked the extra point and with 2:01 left in the first quarter, the visitors took a 7-0 lead.
The Lions’ next offensive series saw Zach Jolley lead off with a 26-yard gain. He picked up 3 yards on his next carry and Zach Garner added a yard, but with a Butler incompletion, Dresden faced fourth down at the beginning of the second quarter. The Lions took it all in stride, though, as a Dale Hutcherson pass hit Daniel Harris in the numbers and spelled out a 13-yard gain and a first down at the Peabody 9-yard line. A flag pushed the Lions back five yards, however and Hutcherson was sacked for a loss to push Dresden farther away from the end zone. When Hutcherson’s pass on third down fell short of its target, the Lions faced a fourth-and-long. Choosing to try for the first down, Hutcherson’s pass was intercepted by A.J. Collier and returned to the Peabody 29.
Back on offense, the Golden Tide again went to Slayton and Jones who picked up small gains and converted a fourth-and-long. The Lions were unyielding on defense, however, and on fourth-and-long, Peabody was forced to attempt a field goal. Callahan’s 36-yard kick split the uprights and gave Peabody the 10-0 lead with 1:13 left before halftime.
In the third quarter, Jones picked up 4 and 3 yards on carries up the middle. Collier gained 4 yards and a first down and followed it with a 19-yard rush down the sideline. Jones lost a yard on his next carry but found the end zone on his next chance and scored a 38-yard touchdown with 8:22 left in the third quarter to put the Tide up 16-0.
Dresden’s next turn on offense yielded a punt, but Peabody’s next try resulted in a Collier fumble back to the home team. At the Tide 36, the Lions picked up 5 yards on a Jolley carry and 20 yards from Garner to put the ball on the Peabody 11. A facemask penalty to start the final quarter gave Dresden the ball at the 2-yard line, but the Peabody defensive line snuffed out four straight run attempts and as neither team put any more points on the board, the Tide took the 16-0 shutout victory.
Jones had 112 rushing yards for Peabody. Jolley led the Lions with 81 in the losing effort.
In a pair of non-region games, Peabody will next take on McKenzie's Rebels and Dresden will host the Golden Tornadoes of Union City. Both games are set for kickoff at 7:30 on Friday night.
