Author, planner to speak
The Messenger 10.5.07

Thomas P.M. Barnett, a strategic planner and best-selling author, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Watkins Auditorium of Boling University Center at the University of Tennessee at Martin.
His visit will be co-sponsored by Honors Programs and the Center for Global Studies and International Education. The event is free and open to the public.
Barnett has spent his life as a student of global affairs. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin with a double major in Russian language and literature and international relations, with an emphasis on U.S. foreign policy. He received a master’s degree in regional studies: Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and a doctorate in international relations from Harvard University.
He has worked in national security affairs since the end of the Cold War and has operated his own consulting practice since 1998. After this practice was acquired by Enterra Solutions in 2005, he assumed the role of senior managing director of Enterra Solutions.
Barnett has been in high demand within the government as a forecaster of global conflict and an expert on military transformation. He has served as senior strategic researcher and professor in the Warfare Analysis & Research Department of the Center for Naval Warfare Studies at the U.S. Naval War College from 1998-2004. During this period, he was detached on special assignment, from 2001-03, as assistant for strategic futures/force transformation in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
Barnett has published several books on global strategy, most notably “The Pentagon’s New Map: War and Peace in the Twenty-First Century” (2004), a New York Times best seller, which was described by Washington Post columnist David Ignatius as “a combination of Tom Friedman on globalization and Karl von Clausewitz on war.” His most recent book is “Blueprint For Action: A Future Worth Creating” (2005). He contributes to several publications, serving as contributing editor to Esquire magazine and as a columnist for The Knoxville News Sentinel.
For more information, contact Dr. Dan McDonough, UT Martin Honors Programs director, by e-mail at danmc@utm.edu or by telephone at (731) 881-7436.
