Nearly 100 runners vie to be fastest in Soybean 5K

Born to run — Winners in the Soybean Festival 1-Mile Kids’ Run for youth up to the age of 10 were (from left) Justin Todd of Dresden, Rhett Fussell of Troy, David Fieser, Michelle Fieser, Emma Fieser and Kelly Fieser, all from Martin.
Nearly 100 participants took to the road Saturday morning to compete in the Soybean 5K Road Race, a part of the Tennessee Soybean Festival which was sponsored by the Martin Kiwanis Club, Ken-Tenn Sports and the Sideline Physical Therapy and Fitness Center.
Paul Thames, of Knoxville, won the men’s division of the 15th Annual Soybean 5K Road Race with a time of 17 minutes and 14 seconds. Jenna Nick, of Columbia, Tenn., won the women’s division with a time of 21:19. The race attracted 99 runners from Japan, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee.
The top three finishers in various age groups for the 5K received trophies.
In the female division for racers ages 11-13 first place went to Leslie Patterson of Martin (31:17), second place went to C.J. Greer of Gleason (40:59) and third place went to Carly Greer of Gleason (43:28).
In the 14-16 age group, first place was won by Kelsey Barnes of Union City (22:55), second place went to Katie Beth Vancleave of Rives (24:39) and Katie Hardin of Kenton finished in third (24:53).
In the 17-19 age group, Nanami Hatori of Japan won first place (24:11), while the runner-up was Jennifer Brooks of Rives (24:44), and the third-place finisher was Christina Johnson of Medina (28:56).
In the 20-29 age group, Wallis Wimbish of Martin raced into first (21:42) with Stephanie Allen of Bradford taking second (24:27). Third place went to Candra Smith of Martin (25:06).
In the 30-39 age group, first place went to Martin resident Laura Fieser (23:26), second place went to Elisha Faulkner of South Fulton (26:59). The third-place competitor was Weslee Hill of Martin (28:07).
In the 40-49 age group, Lynn Patterson of Martin was the quickest to the finish line (23:38) and second place went to Carol Blanchard of Martin (25:34).
Jeannie Riggs, of Finley, Tenn., took first place in the 50 and above age group with a time of 40:31.
In the male division for those 11 to 13 years of age, first place went to Caleb Shumaker of Martin (22:45), second place went to Austin Maxey of Dresden finishing in 24:18, and third place went to Ryne Vinson of Martin (24:38).
In the 14-16 age group, Obion resident Joshua Gale finished in first in 19:16. Second place went to Travis Daniel of Union City with a time of 19:57, while third place was awarded to Kyle Byars of Rives (20:21).
In the 17-19 age group, Munford’s Cody Lemmons won with a time of 18:28, while second place went to Mike Warren of Dresden (20:49). The third-place competitor was Kyle Byassee of Union City (21:07).
In the 20-29 age group, first place went to Darrell Lewis of Ellisville, Mo., with a time of 19:33. The runner-up was Michael Yandell of Martin (20:28), and third place went to Jeff Hart of Martin (21:27).
In the 30-39 age group, first place went to Blake Gallimore of Dresden (19:52). The second-place finisher was Dresden’s Todd Maxey of Dresden (21:57), and third place went to Brad Coker of Martin (22:22).
In the 40-49 age group, first place went to Gordon Sanders of Princeton, Ky., with a time of 17:50, second place went to Todd Cotton of Pinson (21:54), and the third-place runner was Richard Elam of Union City (22:33).
In the group of males age 50 to 59 years, first place went to Bob McCurdy of Dyersburg (21:31), second place went to Dresden’s Roy Herron (23:56), and the third-place finish belonged to Keith Tucker of Greenfield (28:34).
In the group of males 60 and older, Phil Davis of Martin was the winner (21:39), second place went to Jim Stark of Trimble (22:34), and Les MacDiarmid of Martin came in third place (22:58).

In addition to the 5K Road race there was a Recreational Walk and a 1-Mile Kids’ Run for youth up to the age of 10.
In the One Mile Kids’ Run, Michelle Fieser, with a time of 8:42, finished first in the girls division. Emma Fieser (8:52) finished second, and Kelly Fieser (10:08) finished third. In the boys division, Justin Todd of Dresden with at time of 8:25 finished first. Rhett Fussell of Troy (9:28) finished second, and David Fieser (9:47) finished third. The Fiesers are from Martin.
Those participating in the recreational walk were Charlene Burpo of Kenton, Lovie Hardin of Kenton, Amy Montgomery of Union City, Lisa Vancleave of Rives, Michael Pensabene of Fulton, Misty Smith of Springville and John Sterrett of Martin.
