Delphian Review Club meets

Posted: Thursday, September 18, 2008 10:15 pm

The Delphian Review Club met recently at the Obion County Public Library with 19 members present.
The roll call was answered with favorite things associated with Ireland.
President Vicki Blanton introduced guest speaker Anna Clark. Mrs. Clark has been an English instructor at the University of Tennessee at Martin since 1981. She also serves as co-director of the writing center and has been leading college students on educational trips for the last 10 years in an effort to expand their horizons, in addition to studying literature.
She presented a program on her recent two-week trip to Ireland on which she led 21 UTM students in the study of Irish literature.
The group flew into Dublin, where they visited such landmarks as St. Patrick’s Cathederal; The National Museum, which houses the eighth century Tara Brooch; Trinity College, where they viewed the Book of Kells; and the Guinness Brewery.  From Dublin, they traveled into the countryside and headed west to Galway where they ferried to the Aran Islands and read John M. Synge’s “Riders to the Sea.” In Sligo, they read William Butler Yeat’s poem “Lake Isle of Innishfree” and in Limmerick, they wrote limmericks alongside King John’s Castle.
The group ended their 1,500-mile tour of Ireland, including Northern Ireland, back in Dublin. Their grande finale was attending a performance of Colon McPherson’s play, “The Seafarer” at the historic Abbey Theatre.
Delicious cupcakes, frosted in green with various Irish symbols, were served by co-hostess Laura Denaburg.
