The Camden Lions controlled every facet of the game in dominating the Westview Chargers for a 42-14 victory Friday night at Hardy M. Graham Stadium in Martin.
"We got out-hustled. We got out-coached. We got out-played. We got out-executed," Charger head coach Don Coady said after his team's non-region loss. "We weren't very physical. We didn't play very tough football. We were not mentally tough."
After a pair of very tight games the past two seasons, with both decided by one point in Westview's favor, the Lions wasted little time in exerting their dominance.
Andy Travis returned the opening kickoff 58 yards to the Westview 35. From there, Camden picked up yardage in chunks on the ground and were aided by a Charger offsides flag. The drive ended after just four offensive plays when Devon White ran through the line and covered 15 yards on his way to paydirt. Danny Kim, who was perfect on all six PAT tries, booted his first extra point of the night for a 7-0 Lion lead with 9:41 still to play in the first quarter.
The Lion touchdown snapped the WHS defense's streak of six quarters of scoreless football.
A holding penalty helped stall the Chargers' first possession and force a punt.
The second Camden drive appeared to be headed back to the end zone thanks to big gains by Travis and Ross Dudley. A quarterback sneak by Michael Gaskin converted a fourth-and-one and gave CHS a first down at the Charger 19.
From there, the Lions self-destructed and the Charger defense stiffened. An illegal block penalty negated a Dudley run to the end zone. After that, Bradley Hahn and Denzel Cook combined for a sack of Gaskins for a 1-yard loss to set up a second-and-14 at the 25. Westview tackled Travis for a short 2-yard gain and then forced another incompletion. Thanks to strong defensive play on the stand, the Chargers were able to decline two Camden penalties and force a fourth-and-14. The Chargers stopped Patrick Hassell 2 yards shy of the first down and took over at their own 12 with 2:46 left in the opening quarter.
With its spirits elevated by the defensive stand, the Chargers began one of their most prolonged drives of the night. A 17-yard run by Demarcus Williams was the big gainer in the drive which saw Westview earn four first downs by mixing runs from Williams, J.C. Griggs and quarterback Brian West. Camden's defense then dug in its heels and forced a fourth-and-five from the Lion 27. Coady called on normally reliable place-kicker Hyantae Kim to put three points on the scoreboard, but the senior's kick was wide left, leaving the Lions in front 7-0.
Taking over, Camden kept its offense on the ground, eating up yardage with sweeps by Travis and Dudley and traps up the middle by White for consistent gains. Travis scored the first of his three touchdowns on the night when he shot through the left side of the line and race 46 yards down the sideline to the end zone for a 14-0 lead with 4:49 remaining in the first half.
The Chargers didn't hang their heads and, thanks to a 59-yard kickoff return by Griggs, had to cover only 26 yards to light the scoreboard. Williams picked up all 29 yards on four carries, including a 1-yard surge through the line for the touchdown. The kick failed, leaving Westview trailing, 14-6, with 2:10 to play in the half.
Camden wasn't done though. A 25-yard kickoff return Brandon Shannon gave the Lions a good start at their own 47. After three plays, Travis caught a Gaskins pass for a 35-yard TD strike and a 21-6 halftime lead for CHS.
The Chargers picked up one first down on their opening drive of the third quarter, but Jordan Murphy tackled Williams for a 2-yard loss on fourth-and-four at the WHS 48 to end the drive.
The Lions marched right back into the end zone with Travis taking a sweep 13 yards up the sideline to cap the five-play, 46-yard drive for a 28-6 edge.
After a Westview punt, Camden took nearly four minutes off the scoreboard before Gaskins hooked up with Nick Ibarra for a 19-yard touchdown pass and a 35-6 lead with 43 ticks left in the third quarter.
Williams and Griggs did the bulk of the damage on the following WHS drive, their second possession to end in a score. It was West who ran in from 9 yards out for the TD to cut the Camden cushion to 21 points, 35-14, with 9:11 left to play.
The Lions erased any thoughts of a fourth-quarter rally by striking quickly on their next possession. Travis went around the left end and raced 61 yards for his third touchdown and a 42-14 lead with 6:49 remaining. Travis finished the game with 183 yards on 12 carries.
Westview's next drive ended with a fumble followed by a Camden punt before time expired for the Chargers.
The non-region loss drops Westview to 3-2 on the season, while Camden improves to 4-1 overall. Both teams will next tangle with regional foes as Westview entertains Dresden with kickoff at the earlier time of 7 on Friday night. Camden will host Huntingdon at 7:30 on Friday evening.
