Dresden doesn't take advantage of Pioneer turnovers in loss
In a match-up of two teams yet to record a win in Region 8-2A, one squad had to take the victory and this past Friday night, the Dresden Lions’ inability to capitalize on recovered turnovers helped the Gibson County Pioneers to the 47-0 shutout victory.
The Lion defense held the Pioneers to just two first downs and controlled the time of possession in the first quarter of play. A Sherrod Johnson 20-yard touchdown run at the end of the quarter gave the visitors a 7-0 lead, but the Lions remained very much in the contest demonstrating success in containing the run and forcing the Pioneers to abandon the passing game altogether. A resurgent Gibson County squad took the field in the second quarter, however, and began to put the game away.
The Lions were forced to punt on fourth-and-long to begin the quarter. Gibson County took over on the Dresden 35, picked up 7 yards on a Chase Arnold carry, was aided by a personal foul penalty on the Lions and recorded a 14-yard touchdown run from Sherrod Johnson. The kick failed, but Gibson County led 13-0 with 9:48 left before the half.
Dresden was forced to punt on its next series, but the Pioneers fumbled the ball back to the Lions with 5:50 left in the half.
At the 41-yard line, Dale Hutcherson’s pass was intercepted by Shawn Karnes. Chase Arnold followed the interception with an 84-yard run down the right sideline for the score. The kick missed its mark, but with 4:07 left in the second quarter, the Gibson County lead grew to 19-0.
The Pioneers again forced the Lions to punt the ball away on their next turn on offense, but again, they fumbled and Dresden recovered. Also identical to the previous possession, a Hutcherson pass was intercepted and this time Karnes ran it back 85 yards for the score. Cody Carpenter added the conversion and Gibson County took a 27-0 halftime lead.
To start the third quarter, Mitchell Simpson recovered a Lion fumble on the Dresden 30-yard line and returned it for the touchdown. Jake Hill ran in the conversion and with 10:20 left in the third quarter, Gibson County held a 35-0 lead.
Dresden turned the ball over on downs, but Gibson County again fumbled the ball back on its next possession. The Lions, however, gained only 8 yards on their next series and gave the ball back to the Pioneers. Gibson County’s next TD came at the beginning of the final quarter of play on a 34-yard run from Joseph Phillips. The kick failed, but the visitors enjoyed a 41-0 lead with 10:29 left to play.
The last Pioneer score came on a 3-yard run by Xavier Wilkins to make the final tally 47-0.
Chase Arnold led the Pioneers with 93 rushing yards and one touchdown. For the Lions, Zach Garner had 59 rushing yards and Jonathan Boyd had 4 receptions for 35 yards.
Gibson County will next host Westview and Dresden will travel to Humboldt. Both games kick off at 7:30 on Friday night.
