PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Bethel put on its best showing of the year and looked like the football Wildcats of the past three seasons as the Cats came away with a 42-10 victory over the host Pikeville Bears. The BC offense was diverse and provided balanced scoring early and the defense was opportunistic.
Bethel took the opening kickoff and got on the board early. The Cats were determined to get a lead as they decided to go for it on fourth-and-two from the PC 42-yard line. Quarterback Chad Lamping called his own number for the first down. After two incompletions, Lamping found Will Cripps open for a 41-yard aerial for a touchdown and Sean Fraser booted the PAT for a 7-0 lead with just 2:15 gone in the first. The defense held Pikeville and Bethel’s offense was back on the move. On the 10th play, Justin Woodard dove in from the 1-yard line for a 14-0 lead. The drive was keyed by two big plays. The first was a third-and-three completion from Lamping to tight end Banarvon Taylor for 25 yards and a third-and-four pass to Joevaris Carter for 25 yards. Pikeville’s second possession ended when Van Alexander dropped PC quarterback Dan Wideman for a 14-yard loss.
Bethel’s ensuing possession stalled and Fraser attempted a 49-yard field goal that had plenty of distance but hit the left upright.
The Bears drove down to the Bethel 17 to start the second quarter but the Cats’ defense stiffened forcing PC to attempt a field goal. As Pikeville attempted the kick from 34 yards out, Bethel’s Antonio Wardlow got a hand on it causing the kick to travel wide to the left. Bethel’s next drive was aided by a roughing the kicker penalty that continued the drive. Shortly after, Woodard broke free for a 35-yard scamper and David Brown finished the drive with a 13-yard punishing run to help Bethel to a 21-0 lead.
Pikeville again drove into the red zone, but Bethel stopped them on the 4, forcing a field goal that the Bears connected on. Bethel’s lead was trimmed to 21-3.
After a defensive stop to start the second half, Bethel’s offense was marching again. On third-and-goal from the 5, Lamping found Carter who made a diving catch in the end zone and the Wildcats were up 28-3.
The Wildcats’ defense, ranked No. 5 in the nation in turnover margin, got another takeaway as Wardlow picked off his fourth pass of the year at the Bethel 13-yard line.
Lamping hit Carter for a 36-yard gain, Woodard ran for 34 yards on two plays and David Brown finished the drive from 5 yards out and Bethel led 35-3.
Bethel’s turnover margin got another boost on Pikeville’s first offensive play following the touchdown as Johnathan Deberry stepped in front of a Wideman pass for his third interception of the year. Two plays later, Lamping hit Cripps for his second TD of the day from 21 yards out. Fraser booted his sixth PAT of the game for a 42-3 lead.
The Bears scored a late touchdown but neither team did anything of offensive significance as the game came to a close.
Woodard posted his best offensive performance at Bethel with 175 yards on 24 carries and one touchdown. Lamping had his best game of the year going 12-of-22 for 191 yards and three touchdowns. Brown ran for 35 yards on seven carries and two scores. Carter ended the day with five catches for 79 yards and a TD. Cripps has three catches for 71 yards and two scores. Taylor caught two for 31 yards. The Wildcat offense out-gained the Bears 445 yards to 388.
Deberry led the defense with 10 stops to go with his interception. Wardlow had eight with a pick and a tackle for loss. Alexander posted six stops, four tackles for loss and a sack. Randall Williams and Cody Baker each had five stops and Baker was credited with a forced fumble.
Bethel improves to 2-4 (1-1) on the season. The Wildcats will celebrate Homecoming on Saturday night with kickoff set for 6 p.m. Pregame festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. The Cats will be hosting the West Virginia Tech University Golden Bears (0-6, 0-3). |
