Rathbun is UTM soccer's all-time shutouts leader after 1-0 victory
Rathbun is UTM soccer's all-time shutouts leader after 1-0 victory | UTM, UT Martin Skyhawks, soccer, Skyhawks soccer, OVC, Ohio Valley Conference, Johanna Rathbun, Martin, Tennessee

Johanna Rathbun
Senior goalkeeper Johanna Rathbun became the University of Tennessee at Martin’s all-time leader in shutouts Sunday, as UT Martin improved its record to 7-3-2 after a 1-0 victory over Jacksonville State at Skyhawk Field.
Rathbun’s nine career shutouts now move her ahead of Cara Sullivan, who tallied eight in 2006 and 2007.
For the day, the Bedford, Texas native amassed six saves, including five in the second half to ensure the Skyhawks never gave up their lead after once again getting on the scoreboard early.
Off a corner kick just 3:56 into the game, freshman Katie Imperiale sent a shot past Jacksonville State’s goalkeeper Christine Cunningham off a pass from Melissa Govea, giving UT Martin a 1-0 advantage. That marked the fourth time in 12 games this season that UT Martin had scored a goal 15 minutes or less into the game.
The goal was the fourth of the season for Imperiale, who was inserted into the starting lineup for the first time since UT Martin’s 4-1 win over SIU Edwardsville on Sept. 5. All of Imperiale’s goals in 2008 have been game-winners.
The assist also gave Govea her seventh point of the season, all coming in the last five games.
Skyhawks head coach Craig Roberts was impressed with the way his team came out of the locker room.
“I thought today at the beginning of the game was some of the best soccer we have played all year,” Roberts said. “It’s always tough to come back after a loss and really play well but today we did a good job of doing that.”
The Skyhawks (2-1-1 OVC) also continued an unusual streak Sunday, as they have now won every game following a loss in the 2008 season. All three games have been 1-0 victories for UT Martin.
UT Martin attempted 13 shots as opposed to Jacksonville State’s 10, as both teams had six shots on goal.
With the win, the Skyhawks gave Jacksonville State (5-6-3, 2-2-1 OVC) just their third loss in their last nine games.
The Skyhawks’ next opponent will be Eastern Kentucky, as UT Martin will travel to Richmond on Friday.
