Coming back from a four-point performance in a loss to the Greenfield Junior High Lady Yellowjackets, the McKenzie Middle School Lady Rebels took Dresden to overtime, but fell short by a bucket and lost to the visiting Lady Lions, 30-28, Monday night in McKenzie.
The Lady Lions opened the scoring for the night on a successful 3-point play by Amy McAlpin, but McKenzie’s Olivia Pate quickly answered with her own 3-point play to tie the score at three with 4:07 left in the opening quarter. Pate broke the tie with a jump shot, but Kailey Martin re-tied the score on a layup with 2:30 on the clock. Both teams again traded baskets before Morgan Jarrett’s jump shot gave McKenzie the 9-7 edge after one quarter.
In the second frame, Breanna Douglas hit one of two freebies to increase the Lady Rebel lead to 10-7, but five straight points from McAlpin, including another 3-point play, helped Dresden surge ahead 12-10. With both teams entering the bonus, the rest of the points were earned at the stripe and the Lady Lions took a 17-13 lead into the break.
To open the third quarter, Sadie Laws sank one of two free throws to pull McKenzie within three, but Dresden countered with a layup from Abigail Lockhart to give the Lady Lions a five-point advantage, 19-14. Behind scoring from Pate, however, the Lady Rebels pulled within a single point, 21-20, at the 1:57 mark and maintained the margin to end the third quarter of play.
The iron turned unkind for both squads in the final quarter as scoring proved to be hard to come by. A basket from Douglas with 2:12 remaining kept the Lady Rebel deficit at one point, 23-22, and upon entering the bonus, two made free throws from Emma Arnold gave the home team the lead, 24-23. The Lady Lions soon entered the bonus as well and after forcing the Lady Rebels to turn the ball over on a 10-second violation, McAlpin hit one of two free throws to send the contest into overtime.
Still in the bonus, Dresden took a one-point lead on a Lockhart free throw, but saw the lead transformed into a two-point deficit as Ashley Booker banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give McKenzie the 27-25 advantage. A Lockhart free throw pulled Dresden within a point, 27-26, and after two missed free throws from McKenzie, Aubrey Riggs sank one of two from the line to tie the score again. Douglas hit one of two from the stripe to give McKenzie the edge, but McAlpin made good on a 3-point play the old-fashioned way to secure the lead and the 30-28 win for the visitors.
McAlpin led Dresden with 14 points. Lockhart had 10. Pate scored 13 for McKenzie in the loss.
The second game looked ready to provide more of the same, but the Rebels used a 7-0 scoring run in the second and third quarters to take a 43-35 win.
McKenzie’s Evan Wilson opened with a long-distance shot to give the Rebels the 3-0 lead. Made free throws from Ben Kendall pulled the Lions closer and at the 1:37 mark, a basket from Austin Maxey tied the game at five. The majority of the scoring came late in the quarter and with both teams entering the bonus early, Maxey hit one of two from the line with 5.6 seconds left in the opening quarter to give Dresden the 11-9 advantage.
In the second quarter, the Rebels held Dresden to just a field goal and a free throw as they scored 11 points and used a 6-0 scoring run to take a 20-14 lead at halftime.
Kendall broke the run in the third quarter by countering a Trevor Willis free throw with a jump shot to make the score 21-16 in favor of the Rebels. Wilson answered with five straight points, however, and a free throw from Chance Flippen increased the lead to 27-16. Outscoring the Lions 13-6 for the quarter, the home team jumped out to a 33-20 lead after three.
The Rebels continued to maintain a 13-point lead, but Dresden’s Kaleb Houston edged the Lions closer with five points in the final quarter. Though the Lions outscored the Rebels 15-10 for the fourth quarter, it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit and the home team held on for the 43-35 victory.
Wilson led McKenzie with 12 points including three 3-pointers. Nathan Coleman scored 10 for Dresden. |
