Former UT Martin professor emeritus passes | University of Tennessee at Martin, Gilbert Carp

Gilbert Carp
Gilbert Carp, of Martin, died Oct. 23. at Volunteer Community Hospital. He was 85. A memorial service and celebration of life was held for Professor Carp on Saturday, at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Martin. Carp was professor emeritus of music and composer-in-residence at the University of Tennessee at Martin. He was on the faculty from 1969 to 1992 with theory/composition and clarinet as his main areas and also served as clarinetist for the University Trio from 1971 – 1988. He is survived by his wife, Rella Anderson Carp. Martin; two sons, David Carp, Katy, Texas; and Donald Carp. Jackson, Tenn.; two daughters, Susan Carp, Martin; and Sharon Watkins, Columbia, Tenn.; and three grandchildren. He was receded in death by his parents, William and Anna Bienn Carp. He was professor emeritus of music and composer-in-residence at the University of Tennessee at Martin, He was on the faculty from 1969 to 1992 with theory/composition and clarinet as his main areas. He was the clarinetist for the University Trio from 1971-1988. Carp received a bachelor of music education at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, and a bachelor of music and master of music at Converse College, Spartanburg, S.C. He continued his education with doctoral studies at Florida State University in Tallahassee and was in private study with Edwin Gerschefski in clarinet and composition, He began his career at an instructor at Grunewald School of Music in New Orleans, La.; was orchestra and band director at the South Carolina School for the Blind in Spartanburg; assistant professor or theory and woodwinds at Converse College and director of the school of music and associate professor at Centenary College in Shreveport. La. Among numerous compositions and premiers, was a Carp collaboration that resulted in “The Tennessee Witch,” an opera parody of the Bell Witch Legend that premiered at UT Martin in the mid-1970s. Carp composed the music and conducted the orchestra for the production. He also represented the State of Tennessee as a composer and performer on the Kennedy Center bicentennial program and performed numerous recitals. A native of New Orleans, he was born April 9, 1923. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, serving in WWII. WCP 10.28.08
