'Wall' to be built, torn down next week at UT Martin

A symbolic “wall of hate” will be built and then torn down Monday through Thursday at the University of Tennessee at Martin as part of the Writing on the Wall Project.
The wall project last came to UT Martin in the fall of 2004.
The wall project is designed to symbolize a dramatic shared community experience of taking personal action to confront human rights atrocities and acts of oppression in society. A cinderblock wall representing these barriers will be built around the fountain located between the Boling University Center and the Paul Meek Library.
Starting Monday, students, faculty, staff and the community can express individual feelings by painting words and symbols on the wall. At 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the wall will be pulled down, symbolic of tearing down hate-related barriers. The public is invited to this closing activity.
UT Martin groups and organizations sponsoring the Writing on the Wall Project include the Student Government Association, Office of Student Affairs, Office of Minority Affairs, American Democracy Project, Office of Alumni Relations and Department of History and Philosophy.
