Utilizing several scoring runs to build early sizeable advantages, the Greenfield Junior High Yellowjacket basketball squads took victories over the Dresden Middle School Lions this past Thursday night in Dresden.
In the first game, the Lady Jackets jumped out to a 7-0 advantage before a free throw from Abigail Lockhart put Dresden on the board with 2:19 left in the first quarter. With Dresden entering the bonus late in the quarter, Lockhart hit three of four from the line and Asa Woodward knocked down a jump shot at the buzzer to make the score 13-6 in favor of the visitors after one.
DMS kept pace with the visitors in the second quarter, but late in the frame Greenfield entered the bonus and used a 15-9 scoring edge for the frame to take a 28-15 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, Dresden opened on a 6-0 run to cut the Lady Jacket lead to 28-21. With just under four minutes on the clock, a jump shot from Kailey Martin cut the lead to six, 29-23, but Greenfield pulled its own 12-0 run, led by six points from Rachel Roberts, to take a 43-25 lead after three.
Roberts continued her hot shooting in the final quarter, scoring 12 points including two trifectas and two 3-point plays, to help her team to 22 fourth-quarter points and a 65-34 win.
Roberts had 20 points in the victory. Emily Allen scored 13 and Kalee Kesterson put up 10 for Greenfield. Lockhart led Dresden with nine points.
In the second game, Hunter Crouse helped his team to a 9-0 lead over the Lions by putting up the first nine points of the contest. Ryne Vinson broke the streak, but Greenfield led 11-2 after one.
Crouse continued his scoring streak in the second quarter, but the Lions put up eight points to the Yellowjackets’ 10 and trailed 21-10 at the half.
The Lions outscored the visitors 9-7 in a low-scoring third frame with baskets from Austin Maxey, Ben Kendall and Davis Moran and cut the deficit to nine, 28-19, but the home team was held to just one basket in the fourth quarter while Greenfield again put up 11 points and took the 39-21 win.
Crouse led all scorers with 25. Vinson scored six for Dresden. |
