Jumping out to large first-half leads, the Greenfield Junior High Yellowjacket squads took both games from the visiting Gleason Bulldogs Monday night in Greenfield.
In the first game, the Lady Yellowjackets opened with a 4-0 lead in a cold-shooting first quarter for both teams on baskets from Emily Allen and Callie Croom. At the 2:21 mark, Briana Jones was fouled behind the arc and hit two of three free throws to put Gleason on the board and cut the lead in half. Greenfield, however, scored three more points and took a 7-2 lead after one.
The Lady Yellowjackets began to break away in the second quarter, holding Gleason to a lone Lindsey Griffin basket while putting up 16 points. At the break, the home team held a 23-4 advantage.
Plagued by turnovers in the third frame, neither team seemingly could buy a basket. Gleason opened with a jumper from Kim Quick and Greenfield scored its only points of the quarter with just seconds left on the clock. The scoring for the quarter was tied at 2-2, but the Lady Jackets maintained a 25-6 edge.
In the final quarter, the Lady Bulldogs entered the bonus, went six of eight from the line and with a basket from Dalis Lampkins, scored more points in the fourth than in the entire game thus far with eight. Greenfield scored 10 points, however, including a three from Rachel Roberts, to take a 35-14 win.
Allen scored 11 points in the win. Lampkins's 5 led Gleason.
In the second game, 3-pointers from Tony Robinson, Hunter Crouse and Zach Grooms propelled Greenfield to a 13-1 lead after one quarter of play.
Blake Taylor, who scored the Dawgs’ only point in the first quarter, put up three in the second and along with Austin Perry’s four points, helped Gleason to nine second-quarter points to Greenfield’s 11, but the Yellowjackets held a 24-10 advantage at halftime.
The Dawgs came roaring back in the third quarter and with four points each coming from Taylor and Perry, equaled the Greenfield offensive output for the quarter. But without gaining any ground, the Dawgs still trailed by the 14-point margin, 34-20, going into the fourth.
Continuing to put up points, Gleason whittled the lead down to 10 points and outscored the home team 9-6 in the last frame of play, but Greenfield held on for the 40-29 win.
Robinson had 21 points and three 3-pointers for Greenfield. Taylor led Gleason with 12.
