| Chargers finish preseason work with jamboree win over Mustangs |

Sometimes a bounce will go a team’s way and sometimes it won’t. The Westview Chargers received a fortunate bounce, while the host Huntingdon Mustangs did not in their jamboree match-up Friday night in Huntingdon.
The Chargers edged the host Mustangs 7-6 on the scoreboard, but not without pinpointing a few of their own difficulties they must work out before the season begins this Friday.
New Charger kicker Hyuntae Kim was the difference on the scoreboard as his extra point kick deflected between the crossbars. While Huntingdon’s kicker found the other side of the crossbar, having his extra point kick deflect out for a miss.
The game opened with Westview on offense looking very good. Six running plays and two first downs had the Chargers on a good opening drive. Then a bad toss from senior quarterback Harrison Moore could not be hauled in by running back Dimarcus Williams. The Mustang defense quickly covered the loose football for a turnover on the seventh play of the game.
The Charger defense returned the favor though, as they got the ball back two plays later. On Huntingdon’s first pass attempt of the game, Buddy Legens of the Charger secondary was waiting on the attempt and intercepted the ball to give the Chargers the ball back at midfield.
Westview settled down on offense and used the momentum created by Legens on the next drive. Tailback Brian West and fullback J.C. Griggs started the drive with carries of 16 and 13 yards, respectively. Six more running plays in a row were capped off with Moore going in for the score with a 2-yard QB keeper. Kim then got his favorable bounce for the extra point and a Charger 7-0 lead with 1:15 remaining in the first 10-minute period.
Huntingdon and Westview both posted drives that only ended up with the other team getting the ball back. On Huntingdon’s third possession of the night, though the Mustangs put together an 11-play drive, all on runs, ending with their own QB keeper for a touchdown. With 1:43 remaining in the game, the Mustangs missed their extra point on a bad bounce almost on the same spot of the crossbar that favored the Chargers.
Westview then ran out the clock to preserve a 7-6 victory in the jamboree.
“This was a typical jamboree — short and sweet. Doesn’t mean anything on your record for the season, next week is when things start to count,” Westview head coach Don Coady said. “Our offense did some good things tonight. We had some consistency at running tonight that looked good in spurts. Next week means a lot when you play an old rivalry like Union City and it will count on our record for the season. So, we’ve got some things to work on for this upcoming week in preparation for that first game of the season.”
The Union City Golden Tornadoes come to Martin to kick off the 2007 regular season for the Chargers on Friday night with a 7:30 start time at Hardy Graham Stadium.
