The Messenger 11.21.08 Two Obion County students and one Martin student have been awarded scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year to attend the University of Tennessee at Martin. The recipients include: • Heather Grossner of Troy, daughter of Linda and Rick Bradberry and Fred Grossner. A junior, she received the Aspiring Women Scholarship and the Maintenance Center Family Scholarship. • Julianne Lawson, daughter of Homer and Julia Lawson of Union City. She is a junior who received the Robert G. and Elizabeth Latimer Scholarship. • Aletha Morris of Martin, a sophomore. She received the Alex Haley Scholarship. — — — Hannah Woodruff, 13-year-old daughter of Robert and Karen Woodruff of Troy, was recently named an All-American Scholar by the U.S. Achievement Academy (USAA). She is an eighth-grader at Lake Road Elementary School. At Lake Road, Miss Woodruff is a member of Beta Club and the Plus Class and participates in the Algebra Bowl and the Academic Bowl. She is in the Top Ten of her eighth-grade class, has been appointed to the yearbook staff, is listed on the First Honor Roll, maintains a 98.2 grade point average and is at the advanced level on all of her TCAP test scores. She is the granddaughter of Jean Calhoun and the late Floyd Calhoun of Union City and the late Elbert and Mildred Woodruff of Hickman, Ky. Miss Woodruff, who was nominated for the honor by Lake Road teacher Jennifer Godwin, will appear in the All-American Scholar Yearbook, which is published annually. The USAA has established the All-American Scholar Program to offer deserved recognition to superior students who excel in the academic disciplines. All-American Scholars must earn a 3.3 or higher grade point average. Only scholars selected by a school instructor, counselor or other qualified sponsor are accepted. “Recognizing and supporting our youth is more important than ever before in America’s history,” said Dr. George Stevens, USAA founder. “Certainly, students recognized as All-American Scholars should be congratulated and appreciated for their dedication to excellence and achievement.”
