Last-second Lady Falcon shot misses to give Gleason a win
With less than five seconds remaining on the clock, Mariah Matthews’ 3-point attempt sailed over its target, sealing the Gleason Lady Bulldogs’ 49-47 victory over the visiting Lake County Lady Falcons last Tuesday night.
The host Bulldogs could not make it a sweep with a win in the boys game as Lake County earned a 77-48 victory.
In a fast-paced first quarter, Matthews opened the girls game with a long-range shot, but Maggie Lowrance answered with a 3-pointer of her own to tie the contest. Lake County soon pulled out to a 9-5 lead, but baskets from Kim Edenfield and Jenna Frazier knotted the score again. A layup from T.T. Flowers gave the Lady Falcons an 11-9 advantage, but Camille Cooper took the lead back for Gleason. Taylor Stout scored at the end of the quarter to give the Lady Bulldogs a 14-11 advantage.
The Lady Falcons’ fullcourt pressure slowed the Gleason scoring. With 4:46 left in the quarter, the score was deadlocked yet again at 16. A layup from Stout gave Gleason an 18-16 edge, but a 3-pointer from April Mendez put the Lady Falcons in front 19-18. A 6-0 run by Gleason stretched its lead to 24-19, but Lake County answered and tied the game at 24. A Frazier free throw made the score 25-24 in favor of the home team at the break.
In the third quarter, Gleason used a 14-6 scoring advantage to break open a 39-30 lead going into the final frame of play.
The Lady Falcons clawed their way back in the fourth quarter, hitting four 3-pointers. With both teams entering the bonus late in the quarter, it became of contest of knocking down freebies. The Lady Bulldogs hit 6-of-16, but held Lake County to just one and gathered a collective sigh of relief and a 49-47 win when Matthews’ last-second shot to steal the game was long.
Frazier led Gleason with 12 points. Stout scored 11 and Edenfield had 10. Flowers was high scorer for Lake County with 11.
In the second contest, Lake County came out firing to build the scoring advantage. Despite outscoring the visitors 21-12 in the final quarter, Gleason could never recover from an early large deficit and fell 77-48.
The Falcons raced to a 7-0 start and behind three 3-pointers from Calius Hockett, outscored the Bulldogs 27-12 in the first quarter.
The pace slowed a bit in the second frame, but Lake County held Gleason to nine points and posted a 44-21 halftime lead.
Getting valuable production from its bench in the third quarter including six points from Rafael Tyler, Lake County took a 65-27 lead through three quarters. Gleason attempted a comeback in the final frame and put up 21 points including two threes from Evan Orr, but the Falcons held on to take the 77-48 victory.
Hockett led Lake County with 23 points. Colin Bennett scored 16 and Orr put up 12 for Gleason.
