| Only one bid was received regarding a city limit boundary survey prompting the Dresden City Board to put back on the table a parcel of land to be annexed into the city limits.
At the December monthly meeting held this past Monday night, the board received word that a single bid had been made to survey the boundaries of the entire town and an area earlier discussed but rejected for annexation on South Parkway and Gaylord Road. The bid came from L.I. Smith and totaled $79,870.25 for the entire city and $5,798.67 for the area of South Parkway and Gaylord Road.
After the request to accept the bids died for lack of a motion, Alderman Dick Tidwell made a motion to reinstate the previous motion to annex Parkway and Gaylord Road. The motion carried and the public hearing will be held at the next monthly meeting on Jan. 5.
In other unfinished business, Sewer Ordinance 2009-08 passed on its second reading. This ordinance was created in regards to Jimmy Westbrook’s request concerning a sewer problem at his property located at 8593 Hwy. 22. The ordinance includes instructions on grease trap maintenance as well as procedures and penalties.
Rounding out unfinished business, the board voted to take $10 million worth of coverage for a premium of $5,264 annually in additional earthquake insurance. This decision came on the heels of the TML’s Risk Management Pool’s procuring additional capacity to enable members located in or near the potential New Madrid Fault area to purchase additional sub-limits of earthquake coverage on their covered buildings and personal property. Presently the City of Dresden has the automatic sub-limit coverage provided in the standard property policy which is $500,000 per occurrence. The City of Dresden currently has a total asset value of $12 million. The earthquake coverage deductible is one percent of the total insurable values of the locations involved in the loss, subject to a minimum deductible of $25,000 per occurrence.
“Earthquake deductible is different than anything else,” David Campbell of Dresden Insurance explained. “TML got the coverage lined up before giving the cities the bids. I’d rather have insurance than wait on FEMA if something does happen.”
In agreeing to take the insurance, the board voted to amend the budget by $5,264. The amount will be prorated based on when the insurance is obtained. The amount will be kept in the general fund until another line item is added to the budget.
In employee’s reports, Finance Director Melanie Bynum informed the board that a rough draft of the audit could be ready within a week.
Police Chief Brent Perry requested the moving of $2,232 regarding the purchase of seized vehicles from the general fund into the drug fund. Additionally, he requested moving $3,452.70 into the police department budget for repair and maintenance and $32.50 for the sale of a toolbox back into the public works budget.
Fire Chief Paul Hutcherson reported that the fire department and office have been renovated. He expressed thanks to everyone for their assistance and support in his transition into the job.
“I welcome any and all input and suggestions,” he said. “We’re going to continue to make steps in the right direction.”
The next monthly meeting of the City of Dresden Board of Mayor and Aldermen will take place at 6 p.m. on Jan. 5.
