Free throws edge G'field girls past Tide

Dating back most recently to a last-second victory in district tournament play, the Peabody Lady Golden Tide and the Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets have come down to the wire with the victory going to Peabody, but not this season.
Friday night at Trenton, the two teams played each other close again, but Greenfield’s ability to connect from the line in the final quarter of play helped it to a 44-40 victory.
The host took the nightcap, defeating the visiting Yellowjacket boys team, 63-46, for a split in the action.
In the first quarter of the girls game, Katie McCall opened by hitting two from the line for GHS. Peabody’s first two possessions produced just as many turnovers, but Roechelle Bolden connected on a layup to tie the contest. The teams traded baskets with the Lady Golden Tide holding onto a two-point advantage. Peabody went up by four, but Jordan Galey knocked down a trey and the opening eight minutes ended with Peabody keeping a 12-11 lead.
McCall hit a three to start the scoring for the second quarter. Laquita Luten tied the contest with a layup, but Emily Randolph quickly untied it with a layup. Lorra Hudson’s 3-pointer gave Peabody the one-point edge, but Greenfield entered the bonus. Again trading baskets, the Lady Yellowjackets took a four-point lead into the break when Randolph put back an offensive board and McCall made a layup.
Greenfield maintained the four-point edge in the third and increased it to six on a Randolph shot inside, but Peabody layups off fastbreaks pulled the Tide back within a deuce. At the end of three, the Lady Yellowjackets held onto a 32-30 lead.
Brianna Harper tied the score at the beginning of the fourth quarter and Peabody took the lead on a Laquita Luten layup. Greenfield grabbed the one-point edge when Randolph got the basket plus the foul and the lead changed hands several times until the visitors entered the bonus. Hitting 7-of-10 from the free-throw line down the stretch, Greenfield kept the home team away from the charity stripe and took the 44-40 win.
Galey led GHS with 12 points. Randolph had 11. Hudson was tops for Peabody with 12.
In the second game, the Tide became well acquainted with the 3-point line early and knocked down 15 trifectas to defeat the Yellowjackets, 63-46.
Greenfield opened with a 4-0 lead and held Peabody in check. The Tide caught fire towards the end of the frame, however, and connected on five 3-pointers to lead 21-12 at the end of one.
Four points from Daniel Ricketts and a long-distance shot from Wes Clark edged the visitors closer, but Peabody hit five more 3-pointers to take the 41-25 halftime lead.
Jess Castleman led GHS with five points in the third, but Peabody continued to show the touch from three and hit four treys to lead 58-36 after three.
The Yellowjacket defense picked up and the Tide offense cooled down in the fourth. Though they held the home team to just five points, however, GHS went 1-of-9 from the free-throw line and fell, 63-46.
Steven Williams led Peabody with 18 points.
Clark and Daniel Rickets each had 12 for Greenfield.
