Though both Greenfield Yellowjacket squads took early leads, they couldn’t withstand the flurry of points the Humboldt Vikings provided in the second half and fell in both contests Tuesday night in Greenfield.
The Humboldt girls took a 70-50 win back to Gibson County, while the Viking boys earned an 86-52 victory.
Despite both teams getting off to slow starts in the first contest, the Lady Yellowjackets took an early 4-2 lead thanks to a layup and a pair of free throws from Katie McCall. Patra Hubbard knocked down a three ball to give Humboldt the one-point edge and the lead changed several times throughout the course of the quarter. The visitors went ahead by four, but a 3-pointer from Jordan Galey narrowed the gap back to one. Natasha Davis and McCall swapped baskets and the Lady Vikings held on to a 14-13 lead after one.
The second quarter belonged almost entirely to Humboldt. McCall paced Greenfield with seven points, but Hubbard continued to show the touch from beyond the arc and drained two more 3-pointers. Humboldt outscored the Lady Yellowjackets 24-9 for the quarter and led 38-22 at the half.
Hubbard opened the third quarter by converting a hook shot which put the visitors up 40-22. Freshman Shameilla McMullen came off the bench as the sparkplug for Greenfield. Her six points along with McCall’s seven cut the Humboldt lead to 10 at 49-39 after three quarters.
The Lady Vikings found the range again, however, in the final quarter of play and put up 21 points to Greenfield’s 11 to take the 70-50 win.
Hubbard led Humboldt with 27 points. McCall had 20 and Galey scored 16 for Greenfield.
In the second game, Greenfield was propelled to a 3-0 start on a Wes Clark trifecta. Humboldt scored four quick points to take the lead, but Clark connected from long range again to put the home team in front 6-4. Matching the fast pace of the visitors, The Jackets remained within a basket of the high-scoring Vikings for the better part of the quarter, but quickly found themselves in a 23-15 hole at the end of the opening frame.
The inside play of Daniel Ricketts kept the home team within shouting distance to start the second quarter. A 3-pointer from Cody Ricketts cut the Humboldt lead to five, but a Viking scoring run provided the visitors with an 18-point cushion at 44-26 at the half.
Antonio Brooks came off the bench to score seven in the third for the Vikings and lead them to a 64-40 advantage after three.
In the fourth, Brooks continued to put up the points for Humboldt. Heath Crouse and Tyler Dunning each had four for the Yellowjackets, but the Vikings sailed to the 86-52 victory.
Tevin Crayton led Humboldt with 16 points. Clark, Daniel Ricketts and Crouse each had 10 for Greenfield.
