Lady Twisters 5th at Trigg Co. event The Union City girls team placed fifth in the Kentucky Machine and Engineering Classic at Trigg County Tuesday morning, winning the consolation bracket over the host team 69-51. The Lady Tornadoes will enter a short Christmas break with a 9-4 record after winning two of three games in Cadiz. UC led Trigg County 31-23 at halftime and stretched that advantage to as many as 23 points in the third period. TC never got closer than 11 thereafter. Labrica Ward, an all-tournament team selection, poured in 30 points to pace the Lady Twisters while Micah Warford, continued her solid play with 17 markers. Union City will now take a short Christmas break before playing Perry County Saturday at 4 p.m. in the 44th annual Martin Lions Club Christmas Tournament. UTM hoops duo earns OVC honors UT Martin’s Lester Hudson and Delrico Lane picked up Ohio Valley Conference honors Monday afternoon for their efforts on the hardcourt last week against Middle Tennessee State and Brescia. Hudson was named the league’s Player of the Week, while Lane shared the conference’s Newcomer of the Week. Hudson, a 6-2, guard from Memphis, averaged 24.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game last week as UTM won at Middle Tennessee and topped Brescia at home. Hudson scored 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting in the Skyhawks win over MTSU. He followed that with 21 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals against Brescia. Lane shared the newcomer honor with Morehead State’s Robert Murry, who earned his second OVC Newcomer of the Week honor after hitting 5-of-10 shots and scoring 11 points in Morehead State’s loss to James Madison on Thursday. Union City native Bell to attend golf college Zachary Bell, son of Rick and Lisa Bell of Union City, will attend the Professional Golfers Career College in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, beginning in January. The two-year school has a 92 percent placement rate of its graduates in jobs within the golf industry. Many graduates are tour professionals, teaching professionals, tournament directors, general managers of country clubs or owner/sales representatives for teh leading golf equipment and apparel companies. New Mocs’ coach is alum Huesman CHATTANOOGA (AP) — Chattanooga hired Richmond defensive coordinator Russ Huesman as the Mocs’ head coach Monday. The 48-year-old Huesman is a 1983 Chattanooga graduate. He helped guide Richmond to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision title Friday, a 24-7 victory in Chattanooga over the University of Montana. Prior to Richmond, Huesman coached at Memphis and William & Mary and worked as a graduate assistant at South Carolina. Huesman said at a Monday news conference that it’s an honor to be named head coach at his alma mater. He is a native of Cincinnati. Huesman succeeds Rodney Allison, whose contract was not renewed for a seventh season. The Mocs went 1-11 in 2008, the first 11-loss season in school history. Contract terms were not announced.
