After notching first win of season, Lions glad 2009 finally arrived
After notching first win of season, Lions glad 2009 finally arrived | Dresden Lions, Matt McCulley, Bradford Red Devils, Dresden Lady Lions, Dresden, Tennessee

Devil in the rearview mirror — Dresden's Matt McCulley (left) blows past a Bradford Red Devil defender during the Lions' win on Tuesday night.
After building a 15-point halftime lead, the Dresden Lions increased the advantage to 21 after three quarters and needed just seven total points in the fourth to put away the Bradford Red Devils and nab their first win, 63-51, of the 2008-09 season Tuesday night at Dresden.
Bradford won the early game over the Lady Lions, 51-39.
First-quarter scoring was close, but five straight points from Dillon Matlock gave Dresden a 19-15 edge as the frame wound down. Matt McCulley knocked down a 3-pointer and DHS led 22-15 at the end of a quarter.
Continuing to pour on the points, the Lions (1-12) grew the lead to 16 behind nine points from McCulley. Dresden held Bradford to 10 points and took a 40-25 lead into the break.
Again holding the visitors to 10 points, the Lions received help from the bench in the form of O’Brien Washington and Austin Evans. A free throw from Evans put the margin at 20 at 55-35, and a shot at the buzzer from Washington ended the quarter with a 56-36 advantage for Dresden.
Bradford posted 16 points in the last quarter, but Dresden held on for the 63-51 win.
Dresden’s McCulley was high scorer with 25 points. Jordan Schoonover led BHS with 11.
In the early game, the Bradford Lady Red Devils held Dresden to single-digit point totals in two of four quarters to win 51-39.
Bradford got off to a fast start and jumped out to a 12-0 lead. Courtney McMillin broke the streak with a trey. Lady Lion Erica Glisson scored on a drive and Marlee Mason hit two freebies to make the score 16-7 in favor of Bradford after one.
Behind seven points from Sarah Morton, the Lady Lions outscored Bradford 15-13 in the second and slimmed the lead to seven, 29-22, at halftime.
A Hannah Wade 3-pointer cut the BHS lead to four, 38-34 with 2:18 remaining in the third. A three from Amy Reddick sliced the BHS lead to three with seconds left on the clock, but Bradford added a free throw and led 41-37 at the end of three.
Mason provided Dresden’s only offense of the final quarter with a lone basket and Bradford took a 51-39 victory.
Wallsmith and Jasmine Morgan scored 11 each for Bradford. Mason and Morton had nine points each for Dresden.
