Lady Chargers rally to force OT, fall to Gibson Co. for first loss
Lady Chargers rally to force OT, fall to Gibson Co. for first loss | Westview Lady Chargers, Gibson County Lady Pioneers, Amber Rechis, Heather Butler, Aubrey Reedy, Martin, Tennessee, Davell Lloyd,

Hands up — Lady Charger Amber Rechis (left) applies the defensive pressure to Gibson County's Aubrey Reedy during Westview's overtime loss Tuesday night.
The Westview Lady Chargers showed grit in fighting back from a double-digit deficit to force overtime before succumbing to the host Gibson County Lady Pioneers, 59-55, on Tues-day night in Dyer.
The Westview boys built an early lead and held off the Pioneers for a 58-51 victory.
In the girls game, Westview, ranked No. 5 in the first AP poll of the season got the first five points of the night before Gibson County, ranked No. 3, used its fullcourt pressure to frustrate the Lady Chargers. A rash of turnovers kept Westview off balance and allowed the Lady Pioneers to find a rhythm for an 11-2 run. Two quick fouls on WHS offensive weapon Amber Rechis also put a damper on her point production as she spent much of the half on the bench.
Heading into the second quarter, GC held a slim 11-9 lead. The battle was in the paint in the second stanza as junior Aubrey Reedy drew fouls and hit free throws. Reedy hit six charity shots and added a bucket while guard Heather Butler also tallied eight points to extend the Lady Pioneers lead to 27-19 at the half. For WHS, freshman Caitlin Campbell put in six points while trying to out-muscle Reedy.
In the third, a Reedy layup pushed the GC lead to a dozen at 37-25 for its largest margin.
Rechis, out of foul exile on the bench, got the hot hand and pitched in 15 points as the Lady Chargers began to have success advancing the ball up the court against the Pioneer press. Rechis connected three times from behind the 3-point line in the third as Westview sliced its deficit to six, 42-36, at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth, 3-pointers by Breanna Pitcher and Rechis twice cut the GC lead to a point.
With 1:20 left in regulation, WHS junior Grace Ann Swaim drove in for a layup, scoring and drawing a foul. Her free throw knotted the score at 49-all.
Gibson County opted to hold for a final winning shot, but Reedy's trey missed the mark to set up overtime.
In the extra time, Reedy hit two charity shots and a layup in the first two GC possessions, while Westview had a turnover and a miss in their opening two possessions.
With the lead, Butler connected on all six free throw tries in the final 34 seconds for a 59-55 Gibson County victory.
Rechis, who missed the final five seconds of OT with a severe leg cramp, finished with a game-high 26 points. For Gibson County, Butler tallied 25 and Reedy added 21 points.
In the boys game, Westview held the Pioneers to six points for a nine-point lead, 15-6, in the opening frame and held that margin for much of the contest. WHS used four points in the paint from both Khorie Johnson and Garrett Vincent.
At halftime, the WHS lead stretched to 33-19 as Dillon Gardner drilled a trey with a hand in his face and four ticks left on the clock.
Gibson County cut into the gap in the third to trail 40-31 heading into the fourth.
The Chargers fended off every run the Pioneers tried to put together with Davell Lloyd taking over the game.
Davell Lloyd's 17 points topped Westview. Jacob Lloyd finished with 12 points and Dillon Gardner finished with 10 points. For GC, Josh Reaves led with 16 points, while Davonte Watson added 12 points.
