Lady Dawg defense stifles G'field; Jackets hold off Gleason boys
Lady Dawg defense stifles G'field; Jackets hold off Gleason boys | Gleason High School, Greenfield High School, Greenfield Yellowjackets, Gleason Bulldogs, Gleason, Greenfield, Tennessee

Playing catch-up — Greenfield's Katie McCall (left) works to cut off the path of Lady Bulldog Ashley Coble during District 14-A action Friday night at Gleason. The Lady Bulldog defense was vise-tight in Gleason's 42-20 victory.
Defense ruled the night when the Greenfield and Gleason high school basketball teams clashed Friday night in Tater Town.
In the girls game, the host Lady Bulldogs held Greenfield in single digits in every quarter on the way to a 42-20 win. In the finale, it was the Greenfield boys who applied the pressure. Gleason's boys managed a second-half rally, but the Yellow-jackets held on to win 36-32.
In the boys game, the Dawgs struggled mightily to put points on the board in the first half. G'field's Wes Clark nailed a 3-pointer to start the scoring. Gleason had an answer in a Ben Sumner stickback for a 3-2 score just 75 seconds into the action.
That Sumner basket was the lone Gleason point from the floor until Preston Frazier launched a buzzer-beating trey at halftime. In between, the Dawgs managed seven free throws out of 14 attempts at the charity stripe for 12 total first-half points.
Unfortunately for the Jackets, they didn't take advantage. Greenfield got a Tyler Jones trey and led 8-4 after a quarter. The Jackets added 11 points in the second frame for a 19-12 advantage at the intermission.
Frazier rode the momentum of his halftime shot into the third quarter, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers. Greenfield countered with five more points from Clark and carried a 28-20 lead into the fourth quarter.
In the final stanza, two Daniel Ricketts free throws bumped the lead back to 10 at 30-20 with 7:22 left to play.
Gleason's Colin Bennett finally warmed up with six points. The Bulldogs trimmed their deficit to two on three occasions, including at 34-32 on a Bennett layup with 18 seconds left.
Five seconds later, Ricketts drilled two more free throws to stretch the Greenfield lead to two possessions for a 36-32 Yellowjacket victory.
Clark topped G'field scorers with 10 points, while Frazier led all scorers with 11 for Gleason.
In the girls game, the Lady Jacket offense never found a rhythm, struggling to get the ball into its set offense against the Gleason fullcourt pressure.
Lady Dawg junior Taylor Stout outscored Greenfield 10-9 in the first half. While Stout worked in the paint, five different Lady Dawgs nailed 3-pointers. Gleason led 9-4 after a quarter and 25-9 at halftime.
Gleason extended its lead in the third while limiting the Lady Jackets to three free throws for a 34-12 lead after three frames.
Bench players for both teams played most of the final quarter as Gleason got the 42-20 win.
Stout was the lone scorer in double digits with 14 points. Emily Randolph and Shameilla McMullen each scored four points for Greenfield.
