Galey's clutch late free throws lift G'field in thriller
Galey's clutch late free throws lift G'field in thriller | Trenton Peabody, Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets,Greenfield, Tennessee, Jordan Galey

Kick it out — Greenfield's Haley Rawls (right) draws the defense before attempting to pass to an open teammate during her team's thrilling win over Peabody on Tuesday night.
With no time left on the clock, Jordan Galey stepped to the free-throw line. With no one around her or alongside the lane, the sophomore sank two free throws and secured a 62-61 win for the Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets over the Peabody Lady Golden Tide this past Tuesday night in Greenfield.
The Greenfield boys were on the wrong end of a late score, losing 68-67 to the visiting Golden Tide in a District 14-A split.
The Lady Yellowjackets got off to a 4-0 start and led 6-2 on an Emily Randolph layup. Peabody came back to make the contest close, but a shot from Galey at the first buzzer put the home team up 14-8 after one quarter.
The Lady Golden Tide continued to hang around early in the second frame, but Galey caught fire. She scored 10 points and helped Greenfield to a 29-21 halftime advantage.
Randolph took up scoring duties for the Lady Yellowjackets in the third quarter. With nine points coming from Randolph, Greenfield took a 42-34 lead at the end of three.
Both teams entered the bonus in the final quarter. Laquita Luten and Brianna Harper orchestrated a Peabody comeback. With 38.8 seconds remaining, Luten hit a shot that put the Lady Golden Tide ahead, 59-58, in the first of a flurry of key late points.
Galey answered with two free throws to put Greenfield back up by one. Luten connected on a layup to take the lead back for Peabody and the visitors were awarded possession back on a jump ball call.
However, upon inbounding the ball, Luten crossed over the halfcourt line resulting in a back-court violation and gave the ball back to the Lady Yellowjackets for one more chance at a win. As time ran out Galey was fouled on a layup attempt, hit both free throws and delivered the 62-61 victory for the home team.
The victory was the second of the season for Greenfield over the Lady Tide. The Lady Jackets were 44-40 winners when the teams met on Dec. 5, 2008.
The 62 points for the Lady Yellowjackets were a marked offensive improvement after they managed less than a third of that total in a 42-20 loss to Gleason last Friday night.
Galey led Greenfield with 28 points. Randolph had 13 and Katie McCall scored 11. Luten put up 17 points for Peabody offense.
In the second contest, the score stayed close in the first quarter with both teams trading leads. Greenfield held onto a 10-7 advantage at the end of one.
The margin between the two teams continued to be wafer-thin in the second quarter. A 3-pointer from Wes Clark gave Greenfield a 27-25 lead with 35 seconds left in the half, and the home team maintained the two-point edge and led 29-27 at the break.
Behind a balanced explosive scoring attack, the Yellowjackets built a 10-point lead in the third quarter. Outscoring the Golden Tide 23-15 for the frame, Greenfield led 52-42 at the end of three.
Peabody came roaring back in the fourth and pulled within a basket, 57-55, at the 3:22 mark. The Golden Tide took the lead on a Jake Lewis layup with 1:11 remaining in the contest. Cody Ricketts answered with a layup of his own to put Greenfield back in front. Ultimately, however, Lewis made a layup with four seconds left on the clock that proved to be the game winner and the Tide edged Greenfield, 68-67. The win gave Peabody a season sweep of the Yellowjackets coupled with its 63-46 win on Dec. 5, 2008.
Steven Williams led the Tide with 23 points. Clark and Stephen Johnson each had 13 points for Greenfield.
