Clutch free-throw shooting sends Dresden boys by Peabody
Clutch free-throw shooting sends Dresden boys by Peabody | Dresden High School, Dresden Lions, Peabody Golden Tide, Dresden, Tennessee, Hannah Wade, Tyler McPeak

Inside force — Dresden freshman Tyler McPeak pitched in 16 points and was dominant on the boards during the Lions' 67-58 win over Peabody on Friday night.
The Dresden Lions were cool in the clutch to earn their third win in their last seven games. The Lions made 7-of-8 free throw attempts in the final 43 seconds to hold off the Peabody Golden Tide for a 67-58 win on Friday night in Dresden.
Things didn't bounce the Lady Lions' way in the opening game as their last-second shot hit the side of the rim in a 39-38 loss to the Peabody girls.
In the boys game, a Dillon Matlock 4-footer gave Dresden its largest lead of the second half at 52-40 on the first bucket of the fourth quarter.
From that point, Peabody chipped away at the Lion lead by increasing its defensive pressure to force DHS turnovers.
With 2:12 left in the game, Dresden freshman Tyler McPeak fouled out with his Lions leading 59-53. McPeak was a dominant force in the paint both scoring and rebounding.
The teams swapped free throws until a driving layup by the Tide's Geoffery Crawley sliced the DHS lead to two points, 60-58, with 46 seconds remaining in the contest.
The Tide fouled Matt McCulley on the next Lion possession and the senior hit 1-of-2 at the charity stripe. The Tide grabbed the rebound, but Steven Williams missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer. Daniel Harris hauled in the rebound for Dresden.
Fouled soon after, Harris hit both freebies to stretch the lead to 63-58 with 28 seconds left.
After another missed Tide trey, Austin Evans pulled in the board for Dresden. He too was fouled and sank both free throws to stretch the gap to three possessions at 65-58.
Harris then came up with a steal and added the final two points at the free-throw line to preserve Dresden's 67-58 win.
The Dresden defense was tight in the first quarter, limiting Peabody to four points. The Lions' McCulley tallied seven in the opening frame to help DHS to a 12-4 lead after a quarter despite a late spate of turnovers.
The tempo picked up in the second quarter as both offenses found the range. Dresden posted 24 points to Peabody's 21. For the Tide, Williams lit it up for nine points in the quarter, but the Lions held the halftime advantage at 36-25.
After three quarters, Dresden still enjoyed a 50-40 lead setting up the late drama.
McPeak topped DHS with 16 points, while McCulley finished with 11 and Austin Evans added 10 points. For the Tide, Williams led the way with 17 points.
In the girls game, the Lady Lions were playing short-handed as Erica Glisson, Amy Reddick and Sarah Morton were all out of the lineup due to illness.
A long dry spell from late in the first half until deep in the third quarter proved to be the difference in the game. Thanks to patience on offense, the Lady Lions built an eight-point lead at 21-13 on a 3-pointer by Jesica Parsley with 2:14 left on the clock in the first half.
Dresden didn't score again until 1:34 remained in the third quarter — a span of 8:40. During that time Peabody outscored the Lady Lions 12-0 to take a 25-21 lead. Marlee Mason ended the drought with a driving layup.
Heading into the final quarter, Dresden trailed 28-23. The Lady Lions fought back and twice held a one-point lead.
With 18 seconds left, Parsley hit 1-of-2 free throws for a 38-all tie. Peabody's Laquita Luten drove into the paint and was fouled with 2.8 seconds left. She missed her first freebie but hit her second to give PHS a one-point cushion.
Dresden inbounded the ball to Courtney McMillin who dribbled to mid-court and called timeout with 1 second left.
After the timeout, McMillin also got the inbound pass on the right wing but her last shot was off the mark leaving Peabody on top 39-38.
Dresden led 10-4 after a quarter and 21-17 at halftime.
Mason's 10 points led DHS, while Raechelle Bolden tallied 12 points to top Peabody.
