Everyone likes food and young writers are no exception.
The West Tennessee Writing Project is offering the next Young Writers’ Clubhouse at the University of Tennessee at Martin from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 7 with the theme of “Writing With Food — Yum!”
The program is for third- through eighth-graders and will be held in Rooms 231 and 232 of Gooch Hall.
Teachers will meet children at 9 a.m. in the lobby of Gooch Hall, where they will be placed in groups with others the same age.
During the morning session, children will be led in writing activities by West Tennessee Writing Project teacher consultants.
Children may bring a sack lunch or purchase pizza for $1 per slice for lunch. Children may also bring snacks for the mid-morning break. Author’s Chair is a time after lunch when the children come together and share what they have been working on throughout the day.
Other activities will include writing workshops, mini-lessons on content and editing strategies, writing response groups and one-to-one conferences with Writing Project teachers.
“This is a great opportunity for young writers to work with writing project teachers who are committed to putting the fun back in writing while also sharing proven strategies that help students write better in a variety of styles,” WTWP director David Carithers said.
Cost for the session is $30, which includes a writing notebook and pen for each child. Online registration is accessible through UT Martin’s Office of Extended Campus and Continuing Education at http://www.utm.edu/departments/ecce/youthwriting/writingreg.php.
For other payment options, call ECCE at (731) 881-7080 or 1-800-482-5199.
More information on WTWP and access to the Young Writers’ Clubhouse brochure can be found on the WTWP Web site at http://www.utm.edu/organizations/wtwp/index.php.
For specific information about the Feb. 7 clubhouse, contact Brittan Sutherland, WTWP young writers programs director, at sutherlandb@k12tn.net.
Early registration deadline for the event is Feb. 1.
