Lady Dawgs hold off Dresden in split
The Gleason Lady Bulldogs survived a flurry of fourth-quarter scoring by Dresden's Alex Glisson to earn a 42-39 win on Friday night at Dresden.
In the boys game, the Lions blew the game open in the second and third quarters, outscoring GHS 38-9 for a 63-40 win.
In the girls game, Gleason held a 34-26 lead heading into the fourth frame. Then Alex Glisson caught fire, drilling a pair of 3-pointers as part of her 10 points in the quarter. Dresden also got a long shot from behind the arc from Courtney McMillin for the only DHS points in the quarter. Unfortunately, Dresden missed all four of its free-throw attempts in the stanza.
Gleason was stronger at the free-throw line, hitting six of eight at the stripe in the fourth. Jenna Frazier, Kim Edenfield and Sara Hensley each hit two freebies. Edenfield had four points in the quarter as the Lady Dawgs held on for a 42-39 win.
The first quarter of the game was close with Gleason clinging to a one-point edge, 10-9, after eight minutes of action. Frazier was four of four at the line, while Maggie Lowrance drilled a 3-pointer and Ashley Coble had an old-fashioned 3-point play for the Orange and Black.
Countering for DHS, Marlee Mason worked in the paint for six points, including a 4-for-4 effort at the line. Jesica Parsley added a 3-pointer for Dresden.
Four different players scored for Gleason in the second quarter, while Dresden got another trey from Parsley and four more points from Mason to trail 20-16 at the halftime break.
In the third, Gleason used balanced scoring to counter five points from Erica Glisson and five points from Alex Glisson.
Lady Lion Alex Glisson's 15 points led all scorers, while Frazier got 11 to top Gleason.
In the boys game, the Dawgs had the range from 3-land early with Zach Wallace, Preston Frazier and Ben Rollins drilling treys. The Lions got six points from Tyler McPeak and led 15-11 after a quarter.
Obrien Washington heated up with nine points in the second to ignite the Lions and push them to a 33-16 halftime lead.
Seven Lions scored in the third as Dresden stretched its lead to 53-20 after three quarters.
Washington's 13 points led all scorers, while Rollins topped Gleason with 12 points.
