Lady Jackets force OT, but still unable to pull off tourney upset
Lady Jackets force OT, but still unable to pull off tourney upset | Lake County Lady Falcons, Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets, Jordan Galey, Katie McCall, Greenfield, Tennessee

Squeezed out — Greenfield's Katie McCall finds the going tough in the paint against the Lake County Lady Falcons during District 14-A quarterfinal action Monday night at Tiptonville.
They had been out-rebounded by the home team all night, but one important board helped to extend the season four more minutes for the Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets. Unfortunately, however, they fell in overtime, 42-39, to the Lake County Lady Falcons in the quarterfinals of the District 14-A Tournament this past Monday night in Tiptonville.
With 35 seconds left in regulation, Lake County, the No. 3 seed in the tourney, had possession of the ball and a one-point edge, 38-37. Both teams had six fouls, but with 26 seconds remaining, T.T. Flowers was fouled, sending Greenfield over the limit. Flowers hit the first free throw, but after a timeout had been called, her second shot hit the back of the iron. Greenfield’s Jordan Galey had position, grabbed the rebound and was immediately fouled. She sank both free throws and when desperation shots from Flowers and Renita Kinney missed the mark, the game went into an extra frame of play tied at 39.
In the extra session, the Lady Yellowjackets, the tourney’s No. 6 seed, failed to score and Lake County put up three points to take the victory and move on to the semifinals of the District 14-A tournament.
The Lady Falcons will next take on Humboldt at 7:30 on Thursday night at Trenton.
Lake County took an early 8-4 lead in the first quarter. Lady Jacket Katie McCall caught fire from beyond the arc, however, and hit two straight trifectas to give Greenfield a 10-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Flowers tied the contest with a jumper to open the second quarter and Hope Ross completed a 3-point play to give the Lady Falcons a 13-10 edge. A layup from Galey and another three from McCall helped Greenfield regain the lead, 15-13, but Lake County reeled off a 6-0 run to lead 19-15 at the half.
The Lady Falcons continued to set the pace in the third and by the three-minute mark, they had built a 10-point lead, 31-21. With three seconds remaining, Mallory Robinson stole the ball and made a layup, but Greenfield trailed 33-25 after three.
Robinson and Haley Perkins knocked down 3-pointers for GHS to start the final quarter and with 5:47 left, the Lady Yellowjackets trailed by just a bucket, 33-31. Shameilla McMullen hit a layup to tie the contest at 33. Kinney answered with a free throw and a jumper to open up a 36-33 lead for the Lady Falcons. Free throws from McCall cut the advantage to one, but a shot inside from Kinney moved the lead back to three, 38-35. Free throws by Galey sliced the lead to one and when Kinney’s free throw missed the mark, Galey was fouled in the bonus and her two freebies sent the contest into overtime.
In the extra session, Galey missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Lake County got a bucket from Mariah Mathews and a free throw from Kinney to push them to the 42-39 win.
Flowers led Lake County with 14 points. McCall had 15 points and Galey put up 12 for Greenfield.
The Lady Yellowjackets’ season ends with an overall record of 13-13. The Greenfield roster for the 2008-09 season fielded no seniors.
